one thing overlooked is the extra stun effect form the shatter.

Indeed. The warlock in my game was doing wacky things like shattering belt buckles in a bar fight. The stun effect (and falling pants) were fairly handy. Not as good as blasting someone in a real fight, but handy in the situation.

It's an ECL 5 campaign ... as for opponents, as yet no idea.

Maybe I'll just wait a while on these two ... get Eldritch Spear instead.
