The domain-level endgame might finally be back. I'll be very interested to see how many groups actually use it. I know I'm interested.
I heard in the old days of tsr dnd(the days when Dad played) domain play suffered from splitting the party up and people not knowing how to use it for plots.

do you think they might have corrected that yet?

Well, I'm not so sure this is intended to be endgame play in the first place, more like a side hustle.

Beyond that, they've mentioned that the PCs don't need to be present to manage these properties, and the possibility of combining multiple PCs' bastions, which should limit any need to split up

do they have ideas as to what say different classes might want to as domains or what they might do?

My understanding of domain play is that once you got a stronghold, you'd retire your character and make a new one.
Au contraire! You'd talk about how this time you were actually going to continue the campaign into domain play, obsess over the floorplan, furnishings and staff of your keep for a few weeks, come up with some goals and plans, then retire your character and make a new one.

I have been using the playtest rules for the Bastions in my swashbuckling, mesopotamian Ixalan campaign as a ship that the players use to sail around on. It's been a blast.

The rules give me just enough mechanics to make the facilities matter, while giving me enough space to change things to my liking. For instance, I gave the players their first facility at level 3 instead of 5, and the second one at 5. I will do the same for level 7 and 9. It feels pretty good so far.

I have seen a lot of people criticize the design, but as someone who bounced off of the MCDM system, it's just right for me.

Curious to see what they changed!
