Battlefield Vietnam

Bass Puppet

First Post
Ok, so 2 weeks ago I got Battlefield Vietnam from a good friend for my birthday. Needless to say, I'm totaly hooked. I just finished all the pre-levels on Hard and I played MultiPlayer mode last night for the first time.

Man, this game rocks and was wondering if anybody else has been enjoying it as much as I?

Been playing it since it came out. Love it, they were slow in getting the last patch out though. IMO the patch had alot of things that should have been in the game since day one.

Oh yes, I've played quite a lot of BF:V since it was released. Havn't been on much of late though. Just taking a break as I definately haven't lost interst in it. Doesn't help that I've been spending far too much money on other games lately, with the VISA bill as proof :heh:

I don't know why, but it seems that I'm better than my average with the whole "Battlefield Line" of games. Where I'd have thought it a 'good run' to get a kill total higher than my death count I tend to think of a BF:V game with less than a 2 to 1 kill/death ratio as a poor performance. Unless I'm playing on/against a clan of course, those are special circumstances :p

If you find a server or ten that you prefer mabye we could hook up and have some fun. If you don't already have one, definately get either Teamspeak and/or Ventrilo, and of course you have to have a Mic for those. Voice communication is SO usefull in those games.

Definately to your benefit to acutaly crouch-walk or even stop and just listen, especialy in the Jungle maps. I can't count the number of impatient people I've managed to ambush just because I heard them first and stopped to listen-watch them pass.

I too love BFV except for two very important points.

1) The US forces have no anti-aircraft capability. No shoulder launched sams and no AAA sites around the bases. Basically the only way they can defend against aircraft is to get their own aircraft in the air but if the NVA catches them US with no aircraft flying then they own the battle.

2) Maps too small. It seems like when I am flying I am constantly banking to keep from flying off the map. I like the big maps like in BF1942 and Desert Combat. Very few of the BFV maps seem large enough for a good game.

I essentialy agree, but it turns out that a persistant player with the M60 can take down anything that flies. The key is persistance, it's going to take you at least a belt, unless you manage to put most rounds into the tail/nose (no side shooting). Still, you'd figure that the US'd have Stingers or something similar, but I'm not realy conversant with what the US did and didn't have in that era.

If you can steal an RPD or SA-7 as a 'good guy' your job is easier. Staying alive long enough to enjoy your new found toy is problematic at the least once the enemy picks up on your new abilities. ;)

With the improved graphics and all that undergrowth they almost had to keep the initial maps small to avoid scarying or annoying customers that found they couldn't play the bigger maps due to lag. I'm sure someone will come up with bigger maps for higher end computers. Not to mention this was probably meant as an infantry based game, so large maps wouldn't have been nearly as popular to the grunts.

I'm mostly dissappointed that there won't be a Desert Combat mod for the BF:V engine, having an F-16 with real heat-seakers would be about the only improvement that I can think of for DC. Then again mabye BF 2, or whatever the 'modern era' edition is called with be essentialy the same thing.

As for maps I'd personaly like to see, and wish I had the skill/patients to make, would be something with capturable flags in the middle (say a city/ruins) and the spawn points would ONLY be at either end of a fairly long map. Then you'd have more teamwork (yah, I know, dreaming again :() since people would need to be ferried from spawn points to the action. I've never been too keen on this whole deal of capturing a flag/spawn and immediately having half your team appear there loaded for Bear. Putting in primarily transport Helos, with maybe 1-2 attack copters on slow spawns, would idealy encourage the transport and use of ground pounders, but in reality would end up with monumental camping of the aircraft and huge frustratoin levels as morons took the slow spawners out alone.

It'd be nice if the next installment of BF would shift the focus away from 'kills' as the primary means of keeping score. Maybe then we'd get more cooperation and fewer lone-wolf/griefers. Here's to hope :)

REDEYE was the shoulder launched SAM in use by US at the time, Stingers didn't come into the inventory until about a decade later.

To the best of my knoweledge no REDEYEs were deployed to the Vietnam theater. All of the early units were deployed primarily in Korea.

My main beef with BF:V now that the patch fixed alot of the issues is the maps. Alot of the maps are the same basic layout with the flags/ eqipmwnt in a diiferent place. Any moron can move things around an already made map and call it a different map. At least all the maps in BF 1942 were different.

But they did have in place AAA. The new patch fixed it somewhat... the US Jeep with the rocket launcher on it now fires heat seeking anti air missiles.
