Battlerager Vigor question.

I apologize for bringing up such an old issue, but I have tried to find an answer in the archives that satisfies me but I can't.

Obviously this is the first time I have played/examined the Battlerager Fighter, and something bugs me. Apparently, absolutely NO THP's stack with this build.

However, in the BRV Fighter Talent description, the phrase "Whenever you hit an enemy with a melee or a close attack, you gain temporary hit points equal to your Constitution modifier, plus any temporary hit points normally granted by the power." bothers me with the underlined part. Only 1 single Fighter Attack power even gives THP's; AND its a Dragon Magazine power.

I guess what bothers me is that, if the BRV and Invigorating thp's don't stack when you hit with an Invigorating power...why have that sentence.

Please correct me if I have errors in my interpretations.

THP you gain from an attack (which are BR Vigor THP + Invigorating THP, if any) don't stack with THP you already have.

An example:

A dwarf battlerager with Con 20 hits with a common attack (say, Cleave): he gains 5 THP.

The same dwarf hits with an invigorating power: he gainf 10 THP (5 from Vigor and 5 from Invigorating).

Now, if the dwarf alread had 5 THP from the first attack, he would replace them with the 10 THP from the second attack.

Exactly. There are four possibilities:

  • Hit with non-invig power = gain Con mod THP
  • Miss with non-invig power = gain nothing
  • Hit with invig power = gain 2x Con mod THP
  • Miss with invig power = gain Con mod THP

I play a level 3 warforged battlerager with 18 Str/18 Con. They're a lot of fun. They feel very tanky.

The original Battlerager had places where it got to stack temp hp, in contravention of the usual rule that temp hp don't stack. Post errata, they no longer have stacking temp hp in certain situations. Their temp hp just work like everyone else.

...unless I'm misremembering. I haven't read the errata in a while. It's available at the Wizards webpage.

Is it just me or does the battlerager fighter feel more like a classic barbarian than the barbarian?

Somewhat, the barabarian is more the Berzerker now, calling on bestial spirits to empower them (the word means "Bear Skin" iirc as in whering the skin of a bear and gaining it's power). A awful lot of 3rd characters change class when you convert them to 4th.
