My girlfriends parents have recently split. He mum has arthritis and can't work, and she is staying with her mum as the (step)dad is pretty irresponsible and an alcoholic. She's 18, and works less than 16 hours a week. She is still going to be in in full time education next year (if she can afford it).

I was hoping someone out there could give me advice on what sort of benefits they (mum and gf) would be entitled to? Or links to research? I figured soemone one here will know about this stuff...?

I did some research but could figure out how her possibly being in full time education would effect any benefits she might get..?

Thank you for all the help you can give :)

I don't work for Jobcenter plus but they are the first port of call, payment of benefit generally goes from date of contact and is rarely (I understand) backdated. Please bear in mind that the people concerned should talk to their local jobcentre plus office, probably over the phone

If your GF is still in full time non-advanced education (pre-A-levels-ish) then her mother can still get child benefit for her, if GF is working and not on a full time course then no child benefit

I think the mother should start by claiming incapacity benefit and Income Support (IS). The IS would top up the incapacity if the incapacity benefit didn't come up to the mimimun threshold

Another thing to bear in mind is that claims can take a long time to process

and i just googled this...

hope it helps
