Best 3E era monsters?

But it was my intention to be helpful, not to start a flame war.

yeah, but that's hard to avoid when talking about fire elementals.

*crickets chriping*

ooh, now that was bad, even for me. ;)

Fihyr (MMII)

This is a 2nd ed critter with a new spelling (not that feyr, pronounced fear, is better). One of the last Dragons before 3.0 has an ecology that really made them interesting.

It's actually pronounced like "boot". (I watch a lot of Indian movies, and it's one of the usual terms for ghost. I refer to my annual October festival of ghost-centered movie reviews "Bhooty Call.")

I figured as much, but ba-hoot made us laugh!

*is heartened by the fact so many loved using CC I monsters* I'm just wishing the art improved on some in CC Revised. :p :)

I believe they are in the CC & CC II (which I sold long ago):

The merelurker (sp?) is a small ambush predator that uses greed to draw prey.

Legion of one was later turned into a template in the deluxe BOT. It is a monster that can spawn smaller versions of itself (the template makes the spawn normal sized creatures and the legion is 3 size catagories larger). It doesn't have to be applied to evil monsters- a legion treant that breaks and then plants it's branches to create its spawn.

DHM,

Legion of One is indeed in CC II. *has been contemplating making a template of this but only affects goblins* Since that's mostly what the Legion is, a large ogre with the communal intelligence and skill of an entire goblin tribe.

Mire Lurker is in CC I, but it's far from my favorite. Strife elementals, now that's fun! ;)

Who?

I honestly care more about little things like nail stealers, smoke beetles and shocker lizards- which I can place within an ecology, than monsters that only exist to be killed.

Book of Templates Deluxe Edition 3.5 has a legion template, obviously inspired...

Dragon Annual #5 has a 3E Ecology and stats as well.

Interesting. Second edition pretty much passed me by without making an impact.

(I went directly from 1st to 3rd. During the first half of 2nd, I was still playing 1st and deeply upset by most of the changes in 2nd edition. During the second half of 2nd edition, I was playing GURPS. When 3rd edition came out, it looked like a cleaner implementation of my own 1st edition house rules, and I was tired of the complexities of running a GURPS campaign compared to a D&D one. 3rd edition seemed a good moderately complex comprimise.)
