Best 3E era monsters?

I've always loved the Venguarak from the Creature Collection. As well as the Wrack Dragons. Dragons created by magic and death and disease just makes me feel all warm and fuzzy.

My vote is for Chuul as well. Very cool.

Hi,

Another vote for chuul from the MM -- nasty aquatic grapplers.

There have been some great undead in 3.x books:
* Crucifixion spirit (Year's Best d20)
* Bhut - masquerade as human by possessing a corpse (Fiend Folio)
* Hullathoin -- huge undead dinosaur-type monster, creates vampire spawn, unleashes blood locusts (Fiend Folio)
* Forsaken shell -- animated human skins. Yuck! (Libris Mortis)
* Grisgol (MMIII) -- looking forward to using this one at some point

Others:
* Dregg -- sado-masochistic humanoids (Monsternomicon)
* Eldritch Giant -- an interesting giant! (MMIII)
* Greenvise -- like the plant monster in Little Shop of Horrors (MMII)
* Redcap -- great evil fey (MMIII)

There are loads more!

Cheers

Masters of Horror, a Showtime series, had an adaptation of The Screwfly Solution last night (and through out the week until next Friday). There are two monsters I can think of along those lines:

Seeders are from Minions. They are insectoid humanoids that alter human males so that all the offspring the human produces there after are seeders. Instead of some monster from a horror movie, these are a odd bunch- they live in the shadows of civilization and interact with people. They also don't over do it when reproducing- they don't want to exterminate their only method of continuing the species. But that can be changed, one way or another.

Dryden: Friend or Foe is from Ancient Awakening. 3 monsters for the price of one, there is fantasy, modern and future version (though they can be interchanged without any trouble). The fantasy version are plant people that must mate with humanoids and breed true.

Ghostwalk:
* Artaaglith (minions of Orcus!)
* Dread Ram

I've used both of these, but I also like the undead martyr from Ghostwalk: an undead familiar type thing that floats behind a spellcaster. It just looks cool!

Dragon Compendium: Bodak Creature, Purple Dragon* & Granfather Plaque

The first 2 are 1st edition and the third is from Dragon for 2nd.

Expanded Psionics Handbook: Intellect Devourer, Neolithid

The first is 1st edition and the second is from the Ithiliad (2nd ed).

Fiend Folio: Nerra, Terlen & Wendigo

IIRC the nerra were in Planescape, the terlen is a sucky adapation of a Gamma World creature and the wendigo is from an Annual MC.

Frostburn: Smilodon

1st edition.

Libris Mortis: Brain in a Jar*

Ravenloft MC II

Monster Manual: Allip, Aranea*, Bulette*, Devourer, Doppelganger*, Iron Golem, Gorgon*, Grick, Werewolf*, Merfolk*, Mind Flayer, Minotaur, Nymph*, Sahuagin*, Sea Cat*, Triton*, Vampire*, Winter Wolf, Yuan-Ti Halfblood*

Come now. The only 3rd ed creature you listed is the grick...

Monster Manual II: Abeil, Bronze Serpent, Catoblepas, Desmodu, Sapphire Dragon*, Kopru, Megalodon, Myconid*, Neogi, Spellweaver & Tempest*

the tempest...

Oriental Adventures: Tun mi lung Dragon, Me-zu Oni & Tengu*
Planar Handbook: Elsewhale* & Energon

and the elsewhale.

Sandstorm:Werecrocodile, Sand Golem*,

One of the Annual MCs and the Dark Sun MC II.

Stormwrack: Anguillian*, Sea Wolf

Sea Devils and since I don't own this, I am guess it is the weresea lion from the 1st ed.

MM: Destrachan.

Complete Arcane: Spellstitched and Pseudonatural Template.

Libris Mortis: Necromentals and undead anti-elementals (like the desicator. MM3 Dustwight belongs here to). Tomb Mote, Slaymate and swarmform template.

MM3: Forestkith goblins and rot reaver.

ECS: Dolgaunt and Dolgrim.

Various Sources: All new Rakshasa variants, especially the one from the tome of battle.

Tome of Battle: Reth Dekala.

All the above appeared in pre-3e products, so I think elude the intent of "3e era monsters".

EDIT: Beat to it by DMH.

Even adapted to Gehenna/Carceri/the Waste, it's still a flying freaking shark

2e Planescape Monstrous Compendium II (did it come before or after that Gamma World creature?), and yes it looked goofy then as well. Still needs laser beams. Hehehe.
