blonde hair?

I was painting a fig the other day, and I decided to give him blonde hair.

I had to mix up several batches of colors before I finally settled on something that I was more or less happy with. But I wanted to see what others use to make blonde hair.


I ended up using antique white + a light brown + bronze (of all things).


I'd also be curious to know how people create a good lip color without them coming across too bright.

When I was painting on a regular basis, blonde was a relative term. The color is purely a matter of taste. Anything from a pale white with yellow or gold tint, to a deep golden yellow. For lips I simply took the skin tone color of choice and added a drop or two of a maroon or pink color till it made the color I desired.

When I was painting them I used four parts yellow/tan and one part white, the parts changed for darkness. A part was a drop from a dropper.

Oh, something else I did was create an index of my mixes, if I got a color I liked I would dab it on a peice of paper and what I used to get the color.

Hey all,

Blonde is certainly a relative color. Finding one you like, either out of a bottle or by mixing is the way to go. In real life, there are many colors that are all called Blonde.
I've painted using a straw or sand color and I've painted using yellow tones. They all look pretty good, depending on what you want.

For lips... Khaalis has the best method. Add color to your skin tone to get a tone you like.
The skin tone should define the lip color. If you are painting someone with a fair tone, then adding a little pink or maroon to the skin tone is right on target.

For blondes I like to start with a base of very light yellowish brown (about sand colored).
I then add a little more yellow and either blend or dry brush the hair (depending on scale, dry brush for smaller parts and blend for large areas).
A little highlights with straight yellow brings out the glow.
