Bored?

Deadlands eh?

Well, I didn't like the original system.

GURPS was okay.

The d20 version I though had a lot of issues. So much so that I didn't even keep the more utility based monster manuals for Weird Wars or Deadlands.

And now I understand they've gone to the Savage Worlds.

Nah, think I'll stay away from the old Deadlands...

It's not that I want to stop playing d20 or anything but it just seems so much of what's coming out, despite some great works there like Bow & Blade, has been covered before in one form or another, or multiple forms. Part of that may be that I read too much and have been involved with the hobby for a long time.

Take Bastion. Most of their products are usually solid books but they've got a vampire book coming out. It'll be good as one of the first 3.5 vampire books sure but there are like what, three other vampire books already out?

Dragonlance is a classic, but well, it's a claissc. Once again, nice to have 3.5 but...once again, probably a problem of mine as I read those books when they first came out and had the first hardcover for 1st edition long and away ago.

Iron Kingdoms should still have some potential as Sorcery & Steam didn't cover any monsters or mechanical golems or making vehicles but we'll have to wait and see.

I'm not bored. The system doesn't bore me and I don't always need some new rules or twists to enjoy playing it.

What excites me is a cool character concept or a new plot idea that hasn't been played out before. I think standard high fantasy RPGing is kind of blase to me these days, but the recent push of grim settings (other than Ravenloft, which is neat but a bit too polluted with standard D&D these days) has really sparked my interest.

My problem is I usually DM and I find all these neat things I'd like to play in... but none of the other part-time DMs in my group own the resources for it.

You ever get bored with the standard d20 fantasy stuff but don't have a love for learning a new game system or working with a game system that doesn't have a lot of support?
No. My group thrives on fantasy stereotypes, and have done so for more than a decade - we certainly have no intention of changing that.

I dunno.

D20 is okay, but it is very, very far from my first love of gaming. I am gaming it, and enjoying it, but this is mainly because I couldn't round up a group of players with more, shall we say, exotic tastes. Ars Magica is my frist love; I would love to play Agone, Mechanical Dream, and Blue Planet. But it is easier to get a D20 game together (and the only other options available for me locally are GURPS, Rifts, and Vampire; of that spread I'll take D20 every time).

Given this, however, look at the options open with D20 -- X-Crawl, Testament, Call of Cthuhlu, Spycraft, Dragonstar, Ravenloft, Oathbound. There are a lot of "official" options out there and a lot more that can be created. I am working on a setting that more or less mirrors the discovery of the New World, based on the Arcana Unearthed book from Monte Cook, but adding in early firearms and the like.

Never be limited by the core books -- there is ALWAYS more you can do!

Check out the new lord of the rings role-playing game. It's kinda d20 without the license. Not too hard to learn but with a different feel. I must admit I haven't gone through the whole book, but at first glance, it seemed nice. Plus the artwork is great IMO.

I'll pass on this.

I heard, from several sources, that the first core book was plagued with issues.

This doesn't touch on the fact that I own several dozen MERP books from the old ICE days and let me tell you, they were top notch and belong to a system I know how to play.

If I'm going to do fantasy in another system, it's not going to be a new system, especially one that's like d20 but doesn't actually use it. I'd rather go back to playing good old Tribe 8 or Mage the Sorcerer's Crusade, both games that aren't bsaed on some 50 yeard old, but still good, book, that helped lay the foundation of things I'm bored of.
