D&D 5E Build an anti-stereotypical team of 4.

Ancalagon

Dusty Dragon
* Fighter --> Mountain dwarf wizard, 4th level feat heavy armour proficiency +1 str
* Rogue --> variant human warlock with skilled feat and devils sight invocation.
* wizard--> magic domain cleric from UA
* cleric.--> spell less ranger from UA with healer feat.
Re the "cleric" idea, I had built a dwarven "paladin" who was a deluded ranger... his favourite enemy was undead of course.

To the OP: are we missing the mark here?

Well, if you drop the Paladin from my Curse of Strahd game, you get:

Fighter --> Moon Druid
Cleric/Wizard --> Favored Soul
Rogue --> Ranger with thieves' tools
Fighter/Rogue --> Monk

The Paladin helps to pad out the Cleric and Fighter roles, but really, the fifth character just does what a fifth character always does: lets them handle tougher encounters.

If I was building from the ground up to be a bit... slanted, I might go with something like this:

Blade Warlock (fighter)
Lore Bard (cleric, partial rogue)
Land Druid (wizard, fill out cleric)
Shadow Monk (rogue, fill out fighter)

Or:

Open Hand Monk (fighter + rogue)
Deep Ranger (rogue + fighter)
Lore Bard (cleric + rogue)
Favored Soul w/ criminal background (wizard + cleric + rogue)

Oh this is where the title goes?
4 bards would work and be kind of awesome. But with a five-bard party you could have a literal 5-man band!

Leader -> social-focus valor bard (voice and horn)
Lancer -> glamour or whispers bard (flute)
Smart Guy -> control-focused lore bard (shawm or pipes)
Big Guy -> combat-focused valor bard (drum)
Chick -> healing-focused lore bard (dulcimer)

Currently we have:

Cleric of Healing as the tough, tanky guy.
A ranger dual wielding as the damage guy.
A rogue that's focusing on skills and gadgets as the support guy.
And a mystic, Nomad, focusing on control and mobility as the control guy.

I'm not sure what makes a stereotypical party, truth be told. Our last group had a wizard, bladesinger - a sorcerer, focusing on fire, a warlock, GOO and a lore bard.

Currently I have made characters so far:
Front row has Muscular Dragon lineage Sorcerer with a great sword and aversion to shirts.
Tank next to him is a mountaind dwarf with full plate, a wizard.
On the back row I plan to put a female elf archer, champion fighter with some rogue like feats and skills,
and the last member could be ranger or monk. No idea yet, but she has to heal.

Thanx for all the input.
I made a super flexible team.
Barbarian type sorcerer, can dupe and pick a lock, str 16.
Dwarfen defender feeling wizard, platemail, ac 20 and really strong.
Flexible Druid that is a bit normal druid, but is a good at finding traps.
And lastly a swashbuckler Archer, fighter lady, also a bit rogue, lockpicker criminal.

This team can easily lose 1-2 players and still be well rounded.

My current party - still at 1st level as we had first session last weekend - Barbarian with Pirate background; Rogue (Charlatan); Mystic (Far Traveler); Wild Magic Sorcerer. I'm running the Mystic with heal ability, & wields 2 shortswords for 2 weapon fighting.

I prefer flexibility over brute strength, guile over firepower.

I would love to see a team of 4 heroes done against the stereotypes.

Basic roles
* Fighter --> STR 15 variant human sorcerer with weapon's proficiency feat and Greatsword. I think this works.
* Rogue --> some sorf of bard
* wizard
* cleric.

Any ideas how to get characters that actually fill the role?

A Valor Bard for the Fighter.
A Lore Bard for the Rogue.
A Lore Bard for the Wizard.
A Lore Bard for the Cleric.

Did I mention I like Bards?

Beat me to it! I was going to suggest a "motley crew" of 4 Bards...
