Bye Monte!

Best of luck to Monte. You've made D20 my all time favorite system, and your products were always filled with inspiration and were top-notch. I look forward to seeing what's in store for you in the future.

Good on Monte. I had what many here would consider a dream job a few years back and found myself wanting something different. I made the jump -- much to the howls of outrage from my geek friends -- and am far happier and fulfilled in my new/old profession.

I look forward to hearing more about what he's working on in the future and intend on picking up the Ptolus comic trade paperback once it's available.

I'm curious as to how much more stuff will come out from Malhavoc. Despite what Monte has said on his own message boards, it looks like a fair amount of Malhavoc material created for Ptolus isn't in the Big Book, and a compilation of all the Ptolus-related materials into a Ptolus Companion would be really helpful, or at least a full bibiliography listing which books have what elements.

Given the number of Big Names who have played in Ptolus over the years, I think it'd also be great if Monte gave his blessing for them to write adventures or sourcebooks using the setting.

I think 4E pushed him over the edge. One of his former employees and friends is a member of the R&D staff. Do you think he did not get a heads up?

I think Monte is being absolutely honest in his column. I think he feels good about his decision. But I also believe he was at a crossroads due to 4E.

Y'know, that game product he mentioned as being too cool to pass up could be something from his past...like Rolemaster.

Given the hate that is spewed around the ICE offices for Monte, I SERIOUSLY doubt that. If the personal conversations I've had with them are any indication, they won't be calling him up for ANYTHING. Ask Rasyr. He'll be glad to tell you exactly what he thinks of Monte.

On another note, maybe he's gotten tapped to write a Planescape film? That could be cool... ;)

Seriously, I wish Monte all the best. I've been more than happy with just about everything of his that I own, and am sad to see him leave. But he's going out on top, and thats something that not everyone gets to do. I'm very interested and excited to see what he ends up doing next.

Actually, I had no idea that the guys at ICE hated him. What's the problem?

Well, goodby Monte, you're certainly one of the people one could always learn something from. Whatever your secret 2007 gaming product is, consider me thrilled.

"back burner" does not mean good bye. He is just changing the focus of his life's energy. We'll still be seeing stuff, just at a significantly slower rate and in much smaller packages. Plus written by other people.

He may be taking this break because he wants to see where 4E is taking the game. That will be when the real "decision" will be made about Malhavoc.

Seeing how mr. cook is jumping out of the D20 business, i'm guessing 4e. But to be honest i couldn't see that as being so increadibly kewl, unless of course he got carte blanche...

Maybe it's not that he's getting carte blanche so much as that he's involved in a group, or coalition or whatever, that are the party WotC/Hasbro are talking about selling D&D to...

Maybe Mahavloc is too small on its own, but if you had an alliance of successful D20 designers/companies/former developers joining up to create a new company/venture, and purchase the game, he could be involved in that...
