Can Dextyr Keep All These Strikers Alive? (DM: JoeNotCharles, Ozymandias79 Judging)

Tonk melts away into the woods. The swarm of tiny fanged things mills about in confusion, sniffing at the air, but his trail is masked by the scent of his pants, which are lying in a heap in the clearing. Eventually they give up and scuttle into the trees, heading southwards into the woods.

Dextyr and Blade are in conversation when Tonk (but not Tonk's pants) suddenly appears out of the trees. He is closely followed by a pack of snapping drakes that burst out of the foliage, spreading out to surround them! The pack of drakes pulls up short when they see the naked half-orc - those in the rear bump up against those in front - and, is if horrified by the sight, they turn and dart away, this time heading like an arrow for Mikara. They surround her feet, snapping at her ankles and forcing her to pick up her feet as if dancing to avoid a nasty bite.

The guard drake lumbers forward, lowers its head, and charges at her while she's distracted, but her quick movements carry her out of its way. The spitting drake lobs a gob of acid spittle towards her - it lands in the middle of the pack of needlefangs (which scatters to avoid it, then closes in again). It hisses in discouragement and advances up the path, veering aside to take shelter behind a large rock.

The hobgoblin lowers its spear and kicks its charger's flanks. The horse thunders forward, straight at Mikara! Drakes scatter as she dives out of the way. The horse doesn't slow, but continues its charge towards the cluster of allies near the woods. It looks poised to trample over both Blade and Dextyr, when suddenly they move aside slightly to reveal Tonk in all his glory. The horse instinctively swerves out of the way, as the hobgoblin curses and averts his eyes. They fly past, nearly clipping Blade.

The hobgoblin curses again, twists in the saddle and stabs down at Blade with his spear. Finally, a hit! Blade twists out of the way and it's only a glancing blow, but it's still enough to restore some of the foes' morale. The hobgoblin smiles toothily and lets out a piercing whistle, and the tiny swarm of drakes abandon Mikara and swarm towards Blade. The larger drake, unwilling to leave her unguarded, merely edges around to place itself between her and its master.

The Needlefang Drake swarm searches for Tonk with a minor action: Perception vs Tonk (1d20+7=13). Since they don't see him, they move to put themselves between Blade and Dextyr - at Y13, which obviously won't work. They move to W14 (planning to charge to Y13 and bite Dextyr) and then become aware of Tonk. Now they need to pick an alternate target, and since they're too close to charge Blade or Tonk, they charge to V10 and attack Mikara instead: Bite vs Mikara (1d20+8=13, 1d10+4=7). Miss.

The guard drake moves to S7, then charges to U9, attacking Mikara: Bite vs Mikara (w/+1 for charge, within 2 spaces of Needlefang Drakes) (1d20+6+1=14, 1d10+9=16) Miss.

The Spitting Drake spits at Mikara: Caustic Spit vs Mikara (attacks Reflex) (1d20+8=12, 1d10+4=11) Another miss! It moves to R10.

The warhorse moves to R8, and then uses Trample Attack to move to Z12 (damn, not enough to move through Dextyr too). This moves him through Mikara and Blade, getting a Trample Attack on each: Trample Attack vs Mikara, then Blade (1d20+2=4, 1d6+5=7, 1d20+2=7, 1d6+5=11) both miss. Because it ended up adjacent to Tonk, who has no cover, I'm going to rule that it and the hobgoblin automatically see him now.

The hobgoblin automatically moves with the warhorse. It follows up by attacking Blade with its spear: Spear vs Blade (1d20+10=24, 1d8+4=9). Hit for 9 damage, and all its allies gain +2 to attack and damage rolls against Blade until the end of the Hobgoblin's next turn. Then it uses Tactical Deployment, a minor action that lets all enemies within 5 squares shift 3. The Needlefang Drakes move to X12, and the Guard Drake moves to W10.

Your turns! Blade and Tonk will get attacked by the Needlefang Drake swarm's aura at the beginning of their turns.

Needlefang Drake Swarm (38/38)
Guard Drake (48/48)
Spitting Drake (38/38)
Light Warhorse (38/38)
Hobgoblin Subcommander (48/48, used Tactical Deployment)

Dextyr (25/28 hp)
Blade (20/29 hp, all Hobgoblin's allies get +2 to attack and damage until end of Hobgoblin's next turn)
Mikara (24/24 hp)
Tonk (24/24 hp, Stealth 28, +1 to Intimidate, allies get +1 to Stealth against enemies who can see him, but -1 Perception while within 10 squares and LOS)
Tristan (28/28 hp, Stealth 10)

[sblock=About timing]
The rules say that you can't avoid negative effects by delaying your turn - the "beginning of your turn" effects happen the instant you delay. (See p288 of the PHB.) So, Blade and Tonk are next to the Needlefang Drake swarm, and will get attacked. By the rules as written, only Dextyr has a chance to interfere with their attack on Blade - if anyone else goes first, it's because Blade delayed. So the way I'm going to rule this is, keep going in any order, but if the drakes are incapacitated or moved out of their place by anyone other than Dextyr, they'll take their attack on Blade first. However, if Dextyr, Blade or Mikara takes them out, that will save Tonk from an attack, since they all go before him in the initiative order listed.

At the end of every round I'm listing everybody in the order they actually acted, which will be the order used to decide exactly when effects start and end for the next round.

Does that make sense to everybody?

Once again, indecent exposure saves the day!

Question: What kind of action would be necessary to pull the hobgoblin out of the saddle? Is it even possible in 4E?

Edited the wishlist! After listening to the last podcast, I want Tonk to get the Horned Helmet and Vanguard weapon.

Mikara, cautious of the drake, steps to one side, and chooses a more tactical target:

"Hobbie was unwise
to choose such a sickly mount!
That will prove fatal!"

[sblock=Actions]

Minor: Hunter's Quarry on the Guard Drake
Move: Shift to W8 to avoid OA from the Drake
Standard: Hunter's Bear Trap
Target: The Horse
Attack: 1d20+7=23! BoohYeah!
Damage: 2d10+5=20

Target is Slowed and takes ongoing 5 damage (save ends)

Too bad I spent my action point in the last encounter, or I could 1 round that horse!

Ken! If you want to unsaddle this guy, finish off the horse. You only need to do 13 more points, and his AC's the lowest of the bunch (15).

NO MORE CHARGING FOR YOU!

Hopefully, this drake's not going to notice where that came from.

[sblock=OOC]
To pull the hobgoblin from the saddle, hit with a Grapple attack, then succeed with an exposed Athletics check - if you win, he's on the ground and prone, if he wins, you still have him grappled but he's still in the saddle, and you can redo the Strength check on your next turn (or as an OA if the horse moves). On the other hand, if the horse moves and you miss again, you'll get dragged along unless you drop the grapple.

But, yeah, killing the horse would also work. (Bonus points if you punch it to death like the camel in Conan.)

EDIT: OPPOSED. OPPOSED Athletics check. (I suppose at this point, any check Tonk makes is an "exposed" check.)

To pull the hobgoblin from the saddle...
Got it!

(Bonus points if you punch it to death like the camel in Conan.)
I might give it a try if Tonk's fists were rattling weapons, like the club and mace. (Be awesome to wear some spiked gauntlets in that case...)

Still, I don't want to kill the horse. Do 4E mounts stay hostile if the rider is downed?[/sblock]Does Tonk have to wait for the others to go before I can post?

The drake swarm nips at Tonk. v. AC (1d20+8=18, 1d10+4=10)

OOC: Sorry, folks, I'm gonna send my character after the swarm. It has too much of an opportunity to wear us down with those automatic attacks.

Tonk snarls and draws his mace. [Minor Action: Ready Weapon]

He strikes! [Standard Action: King's Castle Miss! Ugh! Natural 1! Hope this isn't the start of a trend, and it bites that I just wasted an encounter power.] The little lizards scurry out of the way.

Sorry, folks! 'Fraid my character is a bit of a waste in this fight. Two attacks and no results!

From his vantage point in the trees, Tristan watches the enemies movements for a moment. "That spitter is mine," he declares to his goddess. "But perhaps I can set up an opportunity for Dextyr ..." just before he makes his appearance. Running up beside the guard drake he strikes, trying to drive the drake towards Dextyr, then almost flies over to the spitting drake leaving a wake of silvery leaves that disappear in a moment.

However, it seems his excitement for the battle has made him too hasty as both of his attacks miss their mark, making him snarl in irritation.
[sblock=Actions]Minor: Oath on spitting drake.
Move: to X10. (U6>U7>V8>W9>X9>X10) OA vs. Tristan (1d20+6=12, 1d10+6=12), miss.
Standard: Overwhelming Strike vs. Guard Drake: 1d20+8=10 vs. AC, 1d12+5=14 damage, miss.
Burn Elven Accuracy to reroll: 1d20+8=14, another miss by 1, gah. Was trying to set up Dex to hit all the hob, swarm, and guard drake with shout of triumph, but I guess not.

Action Point: Angelic Alacrity (shift to S11) vs. Spitting Drake: 1d20+8=12, 1d20+8=9, 2d12+5=18, for 12 vs. AC and 18 damage, a miss. This is ridiculous!
Tempted to use the luckblade's daily, but I'd rather not burn any more resources this round. [/sblock]
