Three words:

FATAL the RPG.

As one of my friends once put it.. "Nothing like a game where you can get wrestle-raped to death to put you off RPGs forever..."

You are one of the peasantry, one of the filthy oppressed, in an age of magic heroes that ride through the land gathering glory and riches. Can you stay out of their way and avoid having anything worthy of notice by the murder-hobo^H^H^H^heroes long enough to bring in this season's crops?

A "System Neutral" campaign. Each player picks a different RPG system and makes a character using that system. In-game they each use their own system's rules when taking their own actions, and the GM adjudicates how those actions interact with the game world, and with each other.
That could either be a complete disaster or the most gonzo thing ever!

And every time an NPC interacted with the whole party instead of one specific character the GM would roll to see what system it's using? :)

Or would the GM put the setting on to a different mechanical chassis entirely; one not chosen by any of the players?

In any case, I'll go on record right now as declining to be the GM for this endeavour. :)

The players are henchmen and hirelings for real heroes. While their employers enter the dungeons, fight the baddies, and win all the phat loot, the party must stay out of danger, tend to the horses, cook for the adventurers, and become proficient in largely ignored rules like encumbrance and paying taxes.

Obligatory Monty Python quote: "Come see the violence inherent in the system!"
