Hi, this needs updating as the terminology has changed for 3.5. I've dropped the BAB to +1 as it needs to be available to NPC warriors/fighters for the cultural setup (ancient greece) and the new LA adjustments would otherwise make hoplites impossible, I added lance and Ranseur to the list (as they are two handed piercing reach weapons so should be covered, I would like to make that the ).

I still think its balanced when you consider it against improved shield bash which as a core feat allows you to attack with a shield while retaining the AC.

Hoplite (Regional, Fighter)
Prerequisites: BAB +1, Proficiency with qualifying weapon and Shield, Region: Paludosus
Benefit: When wielding a Spear, Longspear, Lance or Ranseur the character may also use a buckler, small or large shield and gain the shield's bonus to armour class. This feat does not grant any additional proficiencies with weapons so may only be used with weapons with which the character is normally proficient.
Normal: A character wielding a two-handed weapon may not use a shield.
Special: A fighter may select Hoplite as one of his fighter bonus feats.

This feat allows the character to use a two handed weapon, one handed. Is that feasable, no matter what the point calculation? The only feat we ever disalowed, Monkey Grip, has the same basis.

Not quite, it allows the character to use a shield with a specific subset of two-handed weapons (the long pointy ones) and gain the AC bonus from the shield. This allows what was historically possible (greek hoplites and macedonian phalanx) to be modelled by burning a feat.

The weapon is still a two-handed weapon with all the normal restrictions of such so no the feat will not open up the possibility of dual wielding 2 longspears.

It was approved originally but had a +2 BAB and used the 3.0 names for spears (halfspear, shortspear and longspear). I wanted to add Lance (which is in essence a longspear if used dismounted) and ranseur (which is a slightly modified longspear) to the list.

Souds reasonable to me. You might want to add a clause in there that specifically states that you can't shield-bash when using one of the listed weapons. I realize that most won't but there will always be someone who will try to find a way to get an extra attack.

Good points. I'm fine with it. Lycander makes a really good point with shield bash. Please include that provision.

I agree with adding the shield bash provision so here it is.

This feat does not grant any additional proficiencies with weapons so may only be used with weapons with which the character is normally proficient. When this feat is being used the character may only count the shield's bonus to armour class, no attacking actions may be taken with the shield (e.g. shield bash).
