Chris Pine has closed a deal to star in Dungeons & Dragons, the live action film based on Hasbro’s massively popular role-playing game from Wizards of the Coast. Hasbro/eOne and Paramount are jointly producing and financing, with eOne distributing in the UK and Canada, and Paramount the rest of the world.

Given the fact that the last one was terrible, I don't know that investors -- who don't know their Raistlin from their Tasslehoff -- will want to bother with it any time soon.
Past performance is no indicator of future performance. The fact that the last one was terrible is a point in its favour. If the last one was good and still tanked there would be justification of no interest. However, since it tanked for very understandable reasons, there is no reason not to try again.

so what do you doubters think are in the binders?

Animation also is not the same as it was even 5 years ago and D&D has much more money behind it (dragonlance at that point had Keifer Sutherland whose Raist performance was the best part of the movie). Critical role at some point will be streaming animation on amazon. We have Castlevania on its 3rd season. Netflix has a huge library of fantasy animation and its not all anime

Chris Pine will be coming off Wonderwoman and other movies in preproduction. Animation might be easier for studios due to covid

According to the article in the OP the movie, starring Chris Pine will be shot in Belfast, which suggests to me that it will be not be an animation. So, that leaves, the folders to be a script for something Dragonlance and probably an animation with a natural tie in to a toy line from Hasbro.
There are some racial sensitivity issues, but deal able with, IMHO. The female characters are a bit generic in the artwork and Goldmoon is thoroughly whitewashed but all the blokes could be picked out, by even casual fans, in a line up of eighties D&D artwork, which is pretty solid branding.

Past performance is no indicator of future performance.
Film companies are only putting money into big, tried and true franchises nowadays, given how expensive films have gotten to make. Hence all the sequels and reboots.

The odds that they're going to greenlight a reboot of an animated film with a 10% rating on Rotten Tomatoes is slim to none, no matter how much a certain segment of D&D fans wishes otherwise.

If Francis Ford Coppola has trouble getting movies made without a successful pre-existing franchise attached, Dragonlance ain't happening, folks.

Why do binders equal scripts in your mind? Are school kids all scriptwriters? Lots of people have binders, for a variety of purposes.
