ok, i've been politely complained at, so I intend to do something about it.
I play a 17th level cleric in a tt game, chaotic neutral, and armed with a scythe, 3 domains, the ability to spont cast from any of those domains, and a couple of other goodies from a prc.
now, the complaint is that he's no fun for the dm to run things for due to his massive combat ability, which runs something along these lines:
divine favour, shield of faith, spell resistance, divine power, assassins senses. miracle, used for tensors transformation.
nasty attack bonus of +48, ac of 44.
and packs 3x destruction spells for nasty opponents.
though its twinky, its the kind of thing clerics excel at.
I dont want to be a backseat caster, with prayers, blesses heals, etc, because the party doesnt know the meaning of gratitude, and in fact the next time a certain two members die, they're staying worm buffet.
in the last big encounter this character had, his first action was to cast destruction, and toast a shadow worm thing, which ended a combat after a single round, toasting the bbeg very quickly.
the dms solution, is that characters should get pounded on for a few rounds before they bring out the big guns, which makes a combat more dramatic. due to us not doing so, we are regularly facing, and beating encounters which are 4 or 5 crs higher than appropriate.
I see his point, that the encounter is not fun for him if this bbeg he builds up as being super nasty is toasted before it gets the chance to even know we're there. however, by the same token, if a foe has been explained as being turbo nasty, the big guns are the most appropriate response.
my dilemma is to find a solution which doesnt relegate me to an ineffective band aid or support cleric, while actually having an effect on combat. if i don't use the buffs, then his combat ability truly sucks, and he cant hit for toffee, unfortunately the cleric list contains many personal buff spells, and very few ranged combat abilities, which is the province of the wizard.
any ideas?
