Clones Q&A

Nebulous

Legend
Ok.

We get millions of clones from Jango Fett in the 2nd movie. They come from Kamino where they are pumped out regularly i assume. Now,

1) Is there a limit to how many clones can be made?

2) How long does it take to grow and train a fully functional clone?

3) Couldn't Palpatine keep making clones for the Empire for as long as he wants?

4) Do the Kaminoians (sp?) dismantle their cloning facilities?

5) Does no one else in the galaxy have cloning capability?

6) In the expanded universe of Timothy Zahn, which is Lucas-approved, there are new
cloning facilities on another planet making stormtroopers.

which brings me to my last question...

7) ARE stormtroopers left over clones from the clone wars, or new clones, or regular dudes?

1) Is there a limit to how many clones can be made?

Not known at this time.

2) How long does it take to grow and train a fully functional clone?

I've read somewhere that a clone can be unnaturally aged, but the faster you do so, the more mentally unstable they are, and the more they are allowed to age naturally, the more sane they are.

3) Couldn't Palpatine keep making clones for the Empire for as long as he wants?

In fact, some speculate he did this until the end.

4) Do the Kaminoians (sp?) dismantle their cloning facilities?

Not disclosed as far as I know.

5) Does no one else in the galaxy have cloning capability?

Not disclosed as far as I know.

Never been said, but its definitely a very large number.

2) How long does it take to grow and train a fully functional clone?

About half the normal time...so somewhere between 10 and 15 years depending on the final age of the Clones.

3) Couldn't Palpatine keep making clones for the Empire for as long as he wants?

Depends. Does the genetic sample deteriorate over time? If so, he'd need a new base to continue cloning from.

4) Do the Kaminoians (sp?) dismantle their cloning facilities?

No, but I believe that Kamino was the site of a major battle during the Clone Wars. Its very likely that many of the facilities were heavily damageed.

5) Does no one else in the galaxy have cloning capability?

There are other methods, but the Kaminoans seem to have the best. The cloning technology seen in the EU(spaarti cloning cylinders) have a habit of producing mentally unstable clones, and they take the normal time to grow instead of half.

6) In the expanded universe of Timothy Zahn, which is Lucas-approved, there are new
cloning facilities on another planet making stormtroopers.

Those are using the Spaarti Cloning Cylinders, not the Kamino method.

7) ARE stormtroopers left over clones from the clone wars, or new clones, or regular dudes?

Yes and no. Yes, because Lucas says they are. No, because, unlike Boba Fett, the Stormtrooper's voices were NOT changed in the OT DVDs. They still have the original voices, which are different between each Stormtrooper(though just slightly), so that hints at individuals.

Does this mean that they're just clones with a different base? Maybe.

Does this mean that there's a mix of clones AND recruits? That's my preference, as it works the EU information in with Lucas' word fairly well.

Now that would be an interesting twist. You never seen under those damn helmets and they all sound the same. Except they are never mentioned as being a clone army for the empire, but it would make sense. There's no reason for the cloning to stop unless something pops up inbetween Episode III and IV (like a sabateur rebellion)

Well, following EU canon, cloning was outlawed after the end of the Clone Wars by the Emperor himself. Not that this means much, as knowing him, he'd go on cloning anyway if he felt like it. Just make that law so no one ELSE gets an idea on how to make a nice army.

I like the idea of a clone and regular unit mix as well. And damaged facilities on Kamino are a good explanation of why the cloning might have to stop.

And no, i don't think it's explicitly obvious that stormtroopers are clones, even though it makes sense.

The reason that theory is fairly common is that Lucas himself has said it...of course, if he were as set on that as he was Boba Fett being a clone, he would have changed the Stormtrooper voices, too. :)
