Composite Bow Crafting Questions

also it is already designated in the AaEG (arms and equipment guide) that it deals lethal damage. so my question still remains, given its new-found ability to be letal, does it threaten?

Given that there are non-lethal weapons that do threaten (sap in SRD), I'd say that whether or not a weapon does lethal damage is not relevant to determining whether or not it threatens an AoO.

actually the whip DOESN'T threaten any squares atall, so says PHB v3.5 page 121. also the whip dagger does NOT work as a ranged touch attack, it says it is "unhindered" since the first whip cant hurt people with armour that gives more then +1 or natural armour of +3, so that was incorrect on your part.

Good catch on the "does not threaten".

But do not interchange the Arms and Equipment guids (a 3.0 book) and the 3.5 PHB and mix the two together like they both apply.

They do not - either you play 3.0 rules (in which case the arms and equipment guide works as written) or you use 3.5 and try to come up with a "similar type weapon".

Anything that is not hindered by armor means that it "ignores" armor (hence the comparison to a "touch" attack) - there is (and was no other meaning as far as weapons go). So indeed the whip dagger did function as a "touch attack" in 3.5 terminology. What does "unhindered" mean to you that you would come up with something different?

I gave you my recommendation - use it as a combination weapon (doing either lethal or non-lethal damage). But it would appear as if it would not threaten since the base weapon does not. Really, I don't think I would attempt to insert the weapon into a 3.5 game becasue of all the rules issues it invokes - I would just go with a spiked chain, pretty much the same effect - except it does threaten and does lethal damage.

i play 3.5 and will insert the 3.0 book unless it is reprinted. also, in terms of unhindered, means it functions as normal without the hindering that a normal whip would have. that is what it means to me, it would not be a touch attack, that silly, even in 3.0 i highly doubt that is what it means, check it on your own though. in any case, i can see it not threatening but i am hoping to recieve more info then just one person, no offence.

the base weapon also doesnt threaten because it was non-lethal, and didnt always have the chance to hit. i dont mix them like they both apply, i am asking for the best way to switch them, as there was little difference here in 3.0 and 3.5 other then the specific wording.

I can see where your coming from.

The whip dagger does damage even if the opponent has an armor bonus.

I didn't see anything that said the base weapon didn't always have a chance to hit - the base weapon did have the caveat that it didn't do damage to opponents with a +1 armor or +3 nat armor bonus.

Not doing lethal damage really wasn't the factor in whether or not the weapon threatened or not. As pointed out earlier a sap only does non-lethal (or subdual) damage (even in 3.5) and still threatens.

Possible weapon equivalents (or similar ones for comparison in 3.5)

Scourge (a barbed whip) - Complete Warrior

Scorpian tail whip (a whip with a scropian's tail on the end - non-lethal except on critical where it delivers poison)- Sandstorm {Perhaps use the does lethal damge on confrimed critical instead of non-lethal, otherwise functions exactly like a normal whip}

There was a whip dagger in Dragon Magazine #353 (Check the crystal keep website and look under equipment for references)

Best I can come up with.
