D&D 5E Counterspell vs Counterspell

What do you mean? Most of the first page discussion was about fireball, a non-bonus action spell.

It doesn't matter, in this case, if the spell is a bonus action or an action. Neither of those impact, or are impacted by, a character's reaction.

The rules say you can't do a bonus action spell and a regular action spell (except a cantrip) on the same turn. That's all. Reactions simply don't enter into that equation at all.

That's not what the rule says. Under Casting Time, Bonus Action the rule states: "You can't cast another spell during the same turn, except for a cantrip with a casting time of 1 action." (PHB, 202).

Yep. Bonus Action spells are deceptively costly. Heck, even Bonus Actions caused by spells cost an Action and your Concentration most of the time.

But you can cast an Action and a Reaction spell, which this case is about.

Nobody's casting a spell as a bonus action.

I think this is one of those cases that the rules are not decisive about. The doubt about casting a spell with your action and another one with your reaction is clear, the system allows it. But the text of counterspell states that you cast while the target is casting his spell ("you attempt to interrupt a creature in the process of casting a spell"), not after the fireball goes out as some people stated. So here is where it falls to DM decision, if you believe the mage has the power to cast an counterspell, to counter the sorccerers counterspell while he is casting a fireball, you aloow it, if you think thats to much you say no. Remember guys, this is the 5th eddition, rulings not rules :)

Hrm. Okay, yeah, the rules are a tad funky on this one. I still believe the intent was for reaction spells to not be part of that restriction, but I admit it's, at best, unclear.

My take: bonus action spells are cast quickly, but in exchange take a lot of mental energy or whatever. So you're sort of worn out for a few seconds while you recover. That gives a picture for the reaction rule, and also for the weird action surge thing where you can cast fireball twice, but not fireball and exp. retreat. The exp retreat spell actually takes more "effort" than a fireball, it's just over quickly.
