Craft magic item: quick question

creator has to have at least 5 ranks in Climb for a Ring of Climbing,....
Although there is flexibility here that you might not be aware of:

"It is possible for more than one character to cooperate in the creation of an item, with each participant providing one or more of the prerequisites. In some cases, cooperation may even be necessary.

If two or more characters cooperate to create an item, they must agree among themselves who will be considered the creator for the purpose of determinations where the creator’s level must be known. The character designated as the creator pays the XP required to make the item."

Except that the prerequisite is not "5+ ranks in Climb," it's "The creator must have 5 or more ranks in Climb."

Thus, the person designated as the creator must have 5 ranks in climb, and most fighters won't have a Caster Level.

Not quite so clear, of course.

It says the people cooperating must decide who is the creator for purposes where the caster level must be known, and that that person must pay the XP.

It also says that the creator must prepare the spells to be used, but this note says that those prerequisites can be supplied by anyone.

So if "the creator must prepare the spells" really means "someone involved must prepare the spells", then perhaps "creator must have 5+ ranks in Climb" really means "someone involved must have 5+ ranks in Climb"... since neither case is a purpose where the caster level must be known.

Ah - you've changed your mind on that one, then. :)

I'm... undecided :)

From memory, it was in a thread about scrolls where someone queried the legality of cooperating, since "Creating Magic Scrolls" has the note about the creator having to prepare the spells. While I was pointing out the text under the definition of Prerequisites, it occurred to me that there was a parallel...

I'm still sticking with my house rule of using an elf as a material component to substitute for the "Creator must be an elf" prerequisite for Boots of Elvenkind, though :)

 The difference between a material component and a focus makes this particularly...disturbing. "Check out my elfskin boots! Now I just need the cloak!" :]

The distinction was deliberate.

I've long ruled that Boots/Cloaks of Elvenkind must be made by an elf, or out of an elf :D

Id hate to walk into an elven community wearing boots and cloak of elvenkind...made from an elf. Im pretty sure youd get arrested at best for that one....;)
