why does a 2nd lvl character have a +4 mighty comp. bow though? i don't know the item cost/char lvl rules, but it seems a bit extreme

~NegZ

A +4 Mighty Composite Longbow is only 600gp, and at 2nd level you get 900gp, so they could afford it, but not much else.

42 points? not too much ! :)

Ask the local paladin who wielded a twohanded scythe and smited the enemy... I think I remember something about more than 70 points at level 1! :D

Why is everyone refering so much to keen scimitars? They are crap. Sure you get crits 45% of the time, but a greatsword does that damage all the time (neglecting STR damage). Why not buy a keen greatsword then?

Btw, can someone tell me why Drizzt in the FR thingy does not have Improved Critical with two scimitars???

Hell. If you're critical happy, just go for a falchion. :D

Because v1.0 of the Epic Level Rules sucked. ;)

So you also play the variant, that a Ranger may take archer feats instead of ambidexterity and two weapon fighting as virtual feats? How exactly are your rules? (Okay, it's a house rule issue, but the thread is here...)

Yep, I thought it more likely that a good Ranger would have a bow instead of two longswords (standard argument, I know). I actually give them the choice of three different options:

  • 1. Standard PHB--Light Armor only, Ambi, TWF, two seperate weapons (i.e. no Quarterstaff)
    2. Archer Ranger--up to Medium Armor, Point Blank Shot, Precise Shot.
    3. Double Weapon Ranger--Light Armor only, Ambi, TWF, One weapon with two ends (Quaterstaff, Dire Flail, etc.)

I currently have two Rangers in the group. One is using option 2, the other is using 3 (Quarterstaff). So far it's worked pritty well (one session only) and their having fun with the new idea.

I am watching carefully though. Sometimes it does seem a little frightening when they take away nearly 400% of foe's HP, but, as was already mentioned, that can be legal anyway. It was also a fluke (I hope, he rolls with his TI-83, but that's another issue).

I didn't get to see much of either option though. The guy using 3 had to go early and the guy using 2 ran off in the other direction carrying a kid away from combat--almost achieving TPK (Total Party Kill) in the process. He ran into the Gnoll Shaman in the woods, after he failed a Listen check which resulted in the kid being badly poisoned.

Well, anyway, sorry for the brief story hour there. As long as we're reaching out of the Forum, we might as well go far, right? ;)

If you have any other questions bensei, let me know. I'll be happy to answer them.

keen scimitar = wielded in one hand.
keen greatsword - wielded in two

reason to take scimitars over greatsword? simple... 1 level of non-variant ranger... sneak attack dice.

What sneak attack dice? Rangers don't get them.

And keen scimitars aren't that bad. Ideal weapon for a Druid. Our party's druid's got one (and improved crit) and has quite a lot crits!

People just don't like scimitars 'cause Drizzt used 'em. Ticks me off too. The scimitar is a well-rounded weapon. OK. Maybe it's not as well rounded as a sabre (my absolute favorite) but they're pretty nice.

I like it. Also, don't forget that Druids are not allowed to use greatswords.

If your player just rolled a single d8, added the +5, and tripled it - he did it wrong. You actually HAVE to roll the damage three times. If you don't - you don't get the right damage curve.

Perhaps i have missed an errata somewhere but doesnt "x3" mean "multiply by 3"? Maybe im just crazy but i prefer literal translations of rules, it seems to make the game a lot easier to play than everyone reading too much into the rules and trying to change them to meet their own personal needs. like i said, "x3" means "multiply by 3".
