D&D 5E Critiquing the System

..... If you take away magic items from 1E, your AC won't get much below 0.

Yes and in 2e also, and that resulted in players talking about the sweet spot levels. Because at low level (due to low thac0) and at very high level (due to very good AC), physical attacks tended to miss a lot, so often in fact that it really slowed down the game.

My reflection of the past few pages: I think that one of the strengths of 5e is that they went with some easy, but good mechanics (e.g., expertise, advantage, etc.), but I think that one of the weaknesses of 5e is that they went with easy, but not great mechanics (e.g., expertise, advantage, etc.). IMHO, it has a lot of "good enough" sort of design rather than a genuinely satisfying one.

Again, what's the joke around here? That 5e is everyone's second favorite edition?

LOL so the trade off now is that bloated HP slow down the game? Same devil, different name.

Maybe for some people. I don't think there can be or ever will be a perfect edition, but a lot of the issues people bring up have never caused a problem in my game.
Of course there will be a perfect edition, and my post attests to the strength of 5e: in many respects, it's the "good enough" edition for most people old and new to the hobby. I know that I sometimes get accused of not liking 5e enough, but I do think that it's probably one of the most well-designed and solid editions of D&D ever.

Well as a DM i like the HP. When inote down stats for my mobs i do it like HP 5d8 +20 (For a Con18 mob)
so 25-60. I also note down a initial number, let us say 34.
I take pride that i can adjust mobs so that my players face a real challenge, i just got the feel for it, and i roll out in the open. If i make one of my rare mistake and a trash mob became a TPK mob due to some context i di not calculate upfront or a boss mob gets beaten down far to easy (not because of crits or good tactics, that is fair game) then i got the limist where i can adjust a bit.
I am glad i normally do not have to resort to this because of 5e mechanics working so well for me, but i can remember using a screen for my rolls in 2e and having to fudge much more than only HP form time to time!

My second favorite edition is a tie between 1 and 2. 3rd is my fav.

Actually 5e is my second least fav. So thats something. I think. Heh.

That really doesn't have anything to do with the HP bloat since you are talking about mobs now.... but if you have a way for running mobs that works for you--cool. :)

FWIW my favorite is 1E/2E hybrid I ran for over 20 years. 5E does a better job in many respects than 3E for simplicity, but it went too far IMO. My favorite d20 game is SWSE, however.

I mean it's a joke that I have heard floated around here and not an absolute hard rule.

Ah, the game that many thought was going to actually be represented in 4E. It is a great "what if" they had adhered to something like that for 4E, and I say this as someone who liked 4E.
