Then let it be said that Polymorph Other and some other Spells Known will have to suffice.

Edit: J, your suggestions are all Su abilities. Take them off, remove the drawback, keep the rest of the spell as-is?

I didn't see any spell-like abilities in the synopsis of the valiance provided. And does Ex includes such things as SR? Let's not forget the 25 SR that the valiance gets.

I don't see why this is so difficult. If you were looking to make a celestial companion to the fiendform spell, why introduce a creature more than 3 times as powerful as the creature the fiendform suggests? Especially when you look at hacking off abilities of the model creature to make it fit within the parameters of a 6th level spell. It's a square peg, round hole situation.
 

Because the creatures matching the imp and lemure are the lantern and hound archons. And those are as uninspiring as the imp and lemure. :p

To which I was originally inclined to say, "tough nookie" to, but if he's gonna blow all the money and time to research a spell, I figured I'd take a look at how to balance the valiance.

There is a specific reason for the valiance form in particular, *ahemwishfulthinkingoncollinspartahem*, and the fiendform spell just gave him the idea.

Side note: You'll note polymorph self/other does not allow changing form into outsiders, constructs, undead, or a few other things.

Side note 2: My suggestions are both Su and Ex. Nixing Su and Ex abilities but giving Sp abilities save Holy Word sound doable. If that kills it, I'm sorry.

Spell like abilities were not included because when I posted, they weren't included and I didn't want to cloud the issue of whether the current version was balanced.

I'll go grab them for ya.

Side note 3: DR is supernatural, so it'd be gone. SR is extraordinary so it'd be gone.

Valiance spell like abilities:

Always active--Detect Magic

At will--aid, continual flame, detect evil, discern lies, dispel magic, holy smite, holy word, invisbility, polymorph self, remove curse, remove disease, read magic

7/day--see invisibility, cure light wounds

1/day--cure critical wounds

All as 12th level caster.

You mean as "un-AWE-inspiring"? If I had the ability to poly into a hound archon (telport at will) I would be ecstatic. I'd become a world traveler! :D Hound Archons, Lemures and so forth are what you'd get for 6th level. Want something more awe-inspiring, make it a higher level spell.

With the Sp abilities only, save Holy Word, I would consider it balanced, however not a true valiance and thus the intention of the spell is lost (unless the intention is to simply inspire awe to companions and enemies). Personally I dislike making a square peg fit into a round hole because it detracts from the original design of the square and you end up with something totally different. If I were making the spell, I'd rather have a true blue Hound Archon rather than a circumcised valiance ;)
