Well, I do feel a little guilty when my "real life commitments" include two evenings of prepping for my real-world game and one night of running my real-world game.

It happens. I've certainly done the same thing before, and I think you'll find that most the other players here have done that from time to time as well.

Yeah, you're really going to have to get over that "don't DM" thing and start up a game. I'm sure you have some ideas for cool campaigns. :D

I don't know. Usually I have very brief flashes of, "This sortof scene would be cool!" then I forget what it was by the time I go to think of it again. But since I have no good ability to map, and the CR system blows my mind.

I mean, the EL calculator works well, but if I throw 5 pixies at a party that doesn't have a means to thwart invisibilty, it'd be an overpowering encounter rather than just 'very difficult', no?

I've stopped worrying about encounter balance to be honest, because it is too subject to variation, as you say. Not to mention, what if your PCs have a higher stat build? That is the equivalent to and extra level or two, or more. The unfortunate part is, it is completely subject to guesswork. I can regularly throw EL 8 and 9 encounters at my 4th and 5th level PCs, and they'll have no trouble defeating the encounter. I've gotten to the point I just figure if I throw something too hard at them, they'd either better retreat, or they'll wind up dead. :D
