Eh? ~confused~ is 'Over the Edge' a different game?

I'd say it's 100% different, but if you wanted to you could use its 6 pages of rules to run a game set in DnDland. It's by Johnathan Tweet and is arguably the first indie-style published RPG. It's one of those that always makes me feel guilty about my preferred playing style because I want more crunch.

I've given major thought to running an extreme rules-light game in the past, but D&D has always suited my needs, at least for Fantasy role-playing.

If I were to start this campaign today, I'd probably be running a version of microlite20 that's a little more rules heavy (in my head I call it millilite20). The rules for regular 3.5 just gets to be a little bit too much sometimes. WotBS provides all the statblocks, though, and making them up is what I hate the most, so things aren't too bad so far.

Half the time, I just wing it when I DM. Who needs all those stats anyway?

DM's who are afraid they'll 'wing it BAD!' ? And players who like to know wtf they had so much trouble killing. Though, whether the players ever get to know that fact depends on the DM itself.

Yeah, the players shouldn't ever get to know that information, unless they figure it out IC. And part of winging it is handy to keep PCs from metagaming. For example, I have the MM memorized. So if the DM changes up a critter so that I don't know what I'm getting into, I find that to be a pleasant surprise. And any DM that is afraid of "winging it badly" should probably not be DMing at all...half of a DM's job consists of coming up with stuff on the fly, especially since players have a tendency to do the unexpected.
