And any DM that is afraid of "winging it badly" should probably not be DMing at all...half of a DM's job consists of coming up with stuff on the fly, especially since players have a tendency to do the unexpected.

Emphasis mine.

With that bolded portion in mind, I should not be DMing. ;)

And Rae is definitely not looking forward to a fight with the City Guard. Particularly since hiding after being in plain site isn't very easy.

I suppose that is probably true. Though it is okay to ease into. Until you do, you'll never know if you'd be able to DM well or not. Gotta start somewhere, after all.

I did do a tiny little 'explore a cavern and fight a few kobolds' vignette type thing to help teach a friend the basics of the combat system after walking her through character creation. 2 rogues versus 3 kobold warriors as statted up on the SRD. It went fairly well. The biggest stumbling block I encountered there was the lack of a map.

However, for a larger adventure, I'd be a bit more confused. As I said, CR would be an issue for me to some extent, as I'd need to guess which special abilities the group can cope with, and also coming up with an interesting plot. My creativity often comes in the form of 'jacking' other people's ideas and modifying/running with them. Unfortunately, I have no modules from which to jack ideas.

I had planned to start DMing small adventures for Living Enworld(the 3.5 one), but the only level of available PC's is level 6-9 range... which isn't something I'd be comfortable jumping into.

I mean, the EL calculator works well, but if I throw 5 pixies at a party that doesn't have a means to thwart invisibilty, it'd be an overpowering encounter rather than just 'very difficult', no?

See, you already have a good grip of how things work out. :D

lol, for pixies, anyway. I'd hate to fight a group of pixie warlocks or sorcerors... lol.

But other abilities may not be as clear cut when I look at them. But yes, I probably could handle running encounters, except the map difficulty(I'd have to use ASCII maps or whatever)

My other problem would be the concern of being 'boring' with my premise or how I handle things. Though, the players themselves may manage to 'spice things up' themselves.

As far as CR goes, unless you see an obvious reason why the party might have trouble with an enemy, don't worry about it. If all else fails you can lower the hps of the enemies.

And don't worry about boring plot, either. If your players don't like it they can quit. We're all gamers here, not stand-up comedians, professional authors, or salesmen.
