[D&D 4e] IG's "Those Left Behind, Chapter 4(e)"

Shaimon Hu'u, druidic human ranger

Dyspeer stands, tail wagging furiously, and Shai mirrors the move. A wide, child-like grin spreads across his face as he practically cheers, "Food?"

Uulark Simental, Longtooth Shifter Cleric of Sehanine L11

Along with the troop of his comrades, Uulark follows the man, his tummy growling violently.

Talashia does her best to hide her own reaction to the prospect of food...a somewhat embarrassing testament to the realization that her journey to immortality was not yet complete.

Shazi snickered overhead, though he didn't emerge from invisibility. Talashia narrowed her eyes as she glanced upwards and shushed him. She then hurried over towards the man and said with good humor, "I think we'll take you up on that offer, with thanks good sir."

The old man leads you back to his farm, which is a bit farther than you would have expected. Along the way, you learn his name is Ike Merritt.

"Ain't no Mrs. Merritt anymore, she passed a few years ago." He sets a large, steaming pot on the table and passes around some wooden bowls. "Sorry to say she didn't leave me her stew recipe before she went on her way, but this should fill your bellies all the same.

"But this..."
he sets a large loaf of bread on the table next to the stew. "Not even Mrs. Merritt could out-bake this bread!"

"So what in the hells landed you folks on the riverbank, anyway? Not the safest place to be what with the goin's-on as of late."

Uulark Simental, Longtooth Shifter Cleric of Sehanine L11

"Please forgive my atrocious manners, Mr.Merritt! On behalf of all of us, thank you very much for your gracious hospitality! We have not had such a fine home-cooked meal for.....well, for longer that I care to remember! As for your question, I'll leave that to my esteemed comrades to address."

Shai begins shoveling food like he's been starving the moment it's set in front of him, only pausing long enough to give Dyspeer his share. He pauses enough to talk around the mouthfuls of food as Dyspeer jumps up to slurp at his alpha's bowl.

"There was goo critters in the city, you see, and they were making more goo critters, only no one was believing us--or I think maybe they were pretending not to believe us. But still, if nobody stopped the goo critters, whole town would have been goo. And I think we did that, but then the roof caved in, and then we wandered down a tunnel, and then we were here. Well, we were out there with the bear and the two-headed bully and all.

"But you were there for that part, so we probably don't need to tell about those two."

Apparently feeling his story complete, Shai joins Dyspeer in licking the bowl clean.

Uulark is tempted for a moment to join Shai and Dyspeer in licking their bowl. But he decides that this would be rude, so he just stares down at his own bowl, peeking up at the other occupants of the table occasionally. When no one says anything to make Shai/Dyspeer stop what they're doing, Uulark licks his own bowl with gusto. "Mmmmm, good grub, Ike!"

Talashia eats with delicate precision ingrained into her by her years in the academy. She even politely dabs at her lips with her napkin every four or five bites.

"This is quite good," she agrees. "Thank you for sharing. As for the riverbank...Shai's story is accurate, but a simpler version is that we discovered corruption in the city which led to evil brewing beneath in the sewers. In the process of fighting that evil we found our way out of the sewer and into the river."

She smiles tiredly. "And now we need to get back...ideally, without being seen."

Rogash eats heartily and praises the cooking. "Really, it was just dumb luck that brought us to the riverbank. What else has been happening down there that should keep honest folk away?"
