Each spell should have keywords including what arcane school it's in, what divine domain it's in, and any other important things. And yes, I mean every single spell in the game (with a few exceptions) should have a school and domain, regardless of which classes have access to it.

3e did it in kind of a weird way, where the keywords were subcategories of the schools, and the domains had their own spell lists. Which I guess works.

I think schools should be something modularized. They are ultimately pointless unless you play in a specific type of campaign.

I like the idea above that said there should be keywords for spells and among them are the typical schools. That way the "schools" still exist for players that want to play in a campaign where spells can be sorted like some kind of science or want to play a typical specialist wizard, but don't eclipse campaigns with elementalists and other types of specialist wizards.

Also, I never understood why divine spells had schools either.
Depending on edition, you can get bonuses to spells of certain schools. Or spells of certain schools work more or less effectivly in some areas.
