[D&D Cartoon]The nature of Presto's hat as a magic item.

First Post
I was just thinking about Presto while writing a post in another thread, and it occured to me that the kids have always had a way home.

The portal home is Presto's hat.

Think about it. Everything that Presto pulls out of the hat is from the world they are from. Whenever Presto reaches into the hat, he is reaching into the place where he really wants to go, his home world. The hat is not a magic hat but rather a portal, he just hasn't figured it out yet.

It fits with the style of Dungeon Master. He gives them the way home right away, with the understanding that the kids don't really want to leave. He probably figures that when they truely want to go home, they will figure out Presto's hat.

At least that is the way it looks to me.

Moderators, I know this should be in Books, Film, and such but I wanted to get it some press here, toss it there after a bit please!

You have just hit upon my number one pet peeve: folks who deliberately post in the wrong forum, making extra work for the mods, just to get more attention! In fact, doing this is usually a guarantee that the thread will get moved at the earliest possible moment by a very cranky moderator. Please don't do this in the future.

That being said, this could have been a General Discussion thread in any event, since it kinda sorta deals with the magic item. As such, I won't move it - but for different reasons than you had anticipated. :)

Ok PC I fixed it! Turned it into a Magic item discussion... which it was anyways.

We want happy pirate cats! That way they don't shiver our timbers and sink the vessel!

So what you are saying is Dungeon Master is a rat bastard DM?

Well, why shouldn't he be — he is the DM after all, and the best DMs are rat bastards. :)

Plus he's always talking in riddles, confusing the hell out of the "PCs", just like any DM worth his salt would do.

Given that all I remember his hat ever doing is conjuring stuff (and occasionally creatures) that never seem to last past the end of the episode, I would think a reasonable baseline would be to have it able to cast Greater Shadow Conjuration at will. ;)

I always thought it wasn't a portal but rather a limited wishing well kind of deal.

He would make up a rhyme to get an item to help them however it would be based on his personal experiences thus he would get modern items instead of appropriate fantasy ones.

I see it like this:

When he opens the hat, the hat scans his will. In the ep where he pulls out an aircraft carrier he wants the US navy. The hat opens a portal to our world where the US navy is, and he pulls through the battleship. Now my theory is that if he stepped through the hat, he would appear where he wanted to go. So all presto has to do is think of home send the other kids throuh and then climb in himself. Presto, back in the real world. I would think that is was some kind of device that opened a portal to where the user wants to go. Perhaps that is why Venger wants it so bad, it grants interdimensional transport. All the other weapons are cool, but Prestos hat in this way would be the real prize.
