Spelljammer D&D Direct Live Report: 9am PDT (5pm BST) SPELLJAMMER CONFIRMED! DRAGONLANCE!

D&D Direct, WotC's new video-format announcement show launches today at 9am PDT (5pm BST). If you aren't able to watch it, I'll be updating this article live. Feel free to comment below! • D&D digital monstrous compendium. Available to those with WoTC or D&D Beyond Accounts. Volume 1 has an eldritch lich and the 10 legged asteroid spider. And the starlancer. Might have misheard some of that!

• MMO Neverwinter video. Dragonslayer begins June 2022. (I wonder if they'll need a dragonance for that?)
• New D&D actual play video, Legends of the Multiverse. Lots of 80s cartoon style soft rock music. Boo is in it.

I can find what I want from 3rd party publishers (looking at you EN Publishing ), which is great. But there is still part of me that is saddened that I feel that I am no longer the core audience for the game I've enjoyed for decades.

I'm running a 5E campaign right now using the 2E Spelljammer books so going to be really interesting to see how the setting changes. Either way....super excited for this. I wonder if the lack of excitement for the couple others posting here so far is because they either have their "sweet nostalgia spot" positioned prior to or well after the 2E Spelljammer era (my nostalgia sweet spot is dead in the center around 1989-1995).

Either way....Spelljammer was a weird and exotic product in 1989. In 2022 it's borderline plebian and feels almost conventionally necessary for D&D to represent the broader spectrum of high fantasy it is emblematic of.

So pretty much most of what we expected. Slipcase format I would say meets the “new format” criteria because while we’ve had gift set repacks in slipcases before, we’ve never had a major new release done this way. I wonder if the Dragonlance game is gonna be a way to handle mass battle rules perhaps?

Wow, tiny hardcovers in a slipcase sounds like a massive rip off. Why on earth be so wasteful? Absolutely bizarre decision. Glad I'm sticking to digital but I'm sure they'll price digital at the same (likely extortionate) price as physical, in which case: hard pass.

Dragonlance as an adventure makes more sense than as a setting, at least.

It will be interesting to see how they do Dragonlance as an "adventure book." I would have thought you'd need a full setting book AND adventure to do it justice, but I suppose the setting--or at least Ansalon--is sparse enough in detail to make it work. Still, that better be a big book.
