WotC D&D Hiring New Game Designer Months After Firing Many

The job is for an experienced game designer—much like one of the people they let go a few months ago!

The job pays from $86-145k and is for an experienced game designer—presumably much like one of those they let go a few months ago!

Notably, one of those let go in December in Hasbro’s company-wide cost-cutting cull of over 1,000 jobs was D&D designer Dan Dillon. Dillon posted on Twitter—“Well. There it is. D&D is hiring a game designer, 8 months later. Was it worth it, you soulless f*****g cowards? Did you save enough money?”

Sorry that logic got in the way of your misery. Won’t happen again.

Mod Note:
I don't expect you are from the planet Vulcan.

The fact that you chose to take an insulting stab at someone, rather than just letting it go, suggests that you are not being nearly so logical as you imply. Your assessment may be emotionally biased as well...

So, maybe you don't have nearly so much moral high ground here. Certainly not enough of one to justify how you are treating others.

hopefully he knows. its. a. seasonal job lol

I am sure the risks are apparent but not as much as we joke. Some people have worked at WoTC for many years. And even if it is short lived it is great experience. Think of some of the past D&D designers who have become wildly successful such Wolfgang and Monte Cook to just name two.

Um, why are you lying ...

Mod Note:
So, let me ask you a rhetorical question:

Why are you making this personal, when you know that's likely to bring moderator attention, and possibly get you removed from the discussion?

The answer to that question may be very similar to the answer of why someone would word something in a manner that is not strictly in line with facts as presented. People get caught up in arguments, and do less-than-bright things.

Maybe everyone here ought to take a breath for a moment. This topic clearly touches some hot buttons for people - but how WotC acts IS NOT AN EXCUSE for you treating each other poorly.

You all get that? NOT AN EXCUSE. So keep your wits about you, and stop lashing out at each other. Don't expect further warning.

Doing the best imitation of myself
Many years ago, and by this, I'm talking about the 90s, a friend and I were trying to get into the industry. I had that dream of working for TSR and working on D&D. Then I got a position in tech that paid really well and was a completely different career path. I could still do writing work on the side, but I was not going to have this as a career.

Over the years, I've thought about that decision a lot. For a long time, I regretted it. Stories like this make me realize I made the right choice. I know that this position has been described as "seasonal employment" several times in this thread, and I guess I think that's what it is. And that's sad. Good luck to whoever does get it: maybe it will be a springboard to something more long-term.

Sounds like you made the right choice for yourself. I don’t think the term ‘seasonal ‘ work is accurate at all. Many people have worked at WoTC for extended periods of time. Dillon was one of the newer staff maybe it was based on seniority. I don’t know.

…your own quote shows he said "mostly"
Mod Note:

As a way of phrasing the opening of your post, this would have been sufficient to make a good point without making accusations. Accusations make people angry, which increases the likelihood that the thread will require moderation.
