Yeah, sure if you are doing stealth team who plans to stealth a lot then don't make a 5e low dex character in heavy armor.

But the original meme picture was just asking for a stealth check from everybody and the pictures are them in the woods. It could just be the party is traveling in the woods when a really big green dragon flies overhead and everybody says "We hide, stay quiet, and do nothing to draw its attention."

That situation came up with that party response (possibly stronger language was used ) in a 1e game I ran when I rolled a green dragon wilderness encounter result with a 3rd(?) level group.

We used to just bring spare horses for the dragon. :)

I reject the notion that you only have two choices: either "another Dex build" or "forever roll stealth at disadvantage."
its basically dex build or a statistically worse build. Problem is that str and armor is not really better than a dex build, and dex is the most OP stat in the game.
Building around dex gives you the same ac, damage, and hit as a str build, but lets you concentrate stats and gives better save/init/skills. You'll have more hp cause you can dump str and concentrate on con. While its not flavorful, a str build is strictly bad if you don't get to make up your stats and are limited to point buys.

i wonder how many people would use it if they made a heavy counterpart to medium's breastplate? IE: not quite as defensive but doesn't suck at stealth, even if they have a higher STR requirement or something, make one at 15 and 17 AC needing the same STR perhaps to wear?

Can you flesh out your supporting points here a bit more?

For AC:
Light studded leather is AC 12 +dex (max 5) = 17
Medium half plate is AC 15+ dex max (max 2) = 17
Heavy armor plate is AC 18.

Dex build dump stat seems to offer the exact same stat build options for everything else as Str dump dex.

For damage dex has an advantage on a ranged attacks with longbow and crossbows, but for melee finesse maxes out at d8 rapier which matches one handed strength weapons but falls short of two handed d12 or 2d6 str based attacks.

Init is flat out better for a dex build, but dex saves and skills versus str are a bit subjective.

Or maybe we should split this off to a new 5e thread as this point is not really a meme discussion.

If you care about AC, you can go dex + shield (and magical shields are uncommon magic item). Or you can get a heavy crossbow which does D10 damage. If you take crossbow expertise it's the only weapon you need and you get attacks up to 400 feet (2024 version does still give disadvantage over 100 feet). Compare that to the best thrown weapons that use strength, a javelin has range 30/120 feet and only does 1d6 damage.

So yes you have ever so slightly worse AC with heavy armor but in exchange you have vastly superior ranged options, better dexterity save (one of the most common) is better. All with minimal limitations to damage.

The dm saying the room "looks empty" makes me want a dm that is ALWAYS subjective. Add to that, randomly roll dice for no reason.
Those 2 things would totally alter a game. Suddenly everyone cannot parse dm words and actions anymore.

Some of the guys I play with used to play with a DM who would refuse to describe or identify the monsters, so all they knew was that they were fighting bits of cardboard. Sometimes their PCs would get killed by the bits of cardboard.
