“ After all, what are the odds of that happening?”
Considerably less, if you insist on wearing that creaky, riveted pile of iron.

(Side note: I've never seen a single character at my table with a +0 to Dexterity. The lowest Dex I've ever seen was a 13, and it was immediately boosted to a 14. They're like Sasquatch. I know it's possible, I've heard folks who swear they're real, but I've not seen it yet.)

I have played two with -1. :)

Dump stat 8 Dex for me when I played a heavy armor life cleric and a heavy armor paladin.

It seems a natural build decision decent option for any heavy armor character given the 5e heavy armor rules.

Seriously though, for Stealth missions, combat is usually a fail condition. If the mission is Stealth and the alarm gets raised, the mission has failed. The person you were trying to rescue/thing you were trying to steal/baddie you were trying to assassinate has been moved to another location, and now it's all about getting out alive.

Still fun, still exciting, and yep, lots of combat--but that mission is a failure. They won't be able to Do The Thing anymore.

But I'm a weirdo. I like stealth video games too, like Alien Isolation.

Even a breastplate is probably a 4-point reduction in AC; which is about as bad as granting every enemy advantage on attacks except they can still also get advantage.

In a lot of cases it's going to be at least -5 because medium armor applies dex mod, even if it's negative.

But of course it's the player's fault for not having a dex based character.

I just did a quick check in DDB where I've named out campaigns. Roughly 15% ( too lazy to double check everyone at the moment) have a 10 dex or less.

If everyone you see has a 14, it likely means no one is wearing heavy armor in the first place or you have very generous ability score generation method. Most clerics, paladins and about half the fighters don't invest in dexterity.

In which case, the last thing you want is to bring along someone who isn't trained at being stealthy, right?

I'm not really talking about what the character is trained to do, or what they're specialized in. I'm just saying that if you're about to go on a stealth mission, maybe change into some armor that doesn't give you disadvantage on stealth.

I know, I know, that's a super-hot take. Somehow.

And I'm just saying that if you're taking people along who are no good at stealth, you should assume that not-stealth is going to happen, regardless of whether they manage to shave off a little bit of their handicap by wearing lighter armour.

And when it does, that lack of protection will become an issue.

And ideally, all members of the party would want to do both to ensure a successful mission. It's not either-or.

However, that's seldom the case with my players. The cleric, druid, monk, and warlock are all "we're doing our part!" with light armor, silence spells, invisibility, and so forth, but the paladin is all like "meh, I don't wanna." He won't even bother to attune the boots of elvenkind that he's been carrying around for the last five adventures.

(I know I keep harping on this, but it's a real problem in my group right now. The players are getting very frustrated with the paladin always ruining their stealth checks and getting them in trouble, and he just Does. Not. Care. It's to the point where angry emails are getting sent back and forth about it. I thought handing out some elvenkind equipment would help, but nope.)

Ouch. Yeah, that's bad. Sounds like a mis-match of gameplay expectations - the paladin player's response may be just his passive-aggressive way of saying that he's not in this to play stealth missions.
