D&D General D&D weapons vs reality

Though I haven't played it, I do own it. From my memory (it has been a long time), even A5e could use more niche protection for the fighter. However, I am biased and perhaps want fighters to be to special! :p
To follow up on this @Micah Sweet, what I want in a fighter is for them to be clearly the best at fighting. Even in A5e the fighter doesn't, IMO, have a significant if any advantage in combat. Everyone is, like 5e, relatively equal in combat in A5e. Do you think I am wrong in that assessment?

No, and honestly I would like to see the fighter as literally better at fighting too. But no game compatible with modern D&D will ever do that. This is why I also play and love the OSR.

problem with fighters is that is made simple for whatever reasons and presents some mundane fighter without any special flavor or background.
and with more attacks than any other martials, with Action surge, fighter is best at combat, even if it's for a round. And if it's a 1st round, then all the better.

perhaps more weight could have been allocated towards subclasses, leaving champion as boring fighter's fighter.

maybe give ability to trash Heavy armor at 1st level for 1 skill, 1 tool or language and 1 Expertise to give some variety.

default fighter should be merged with battlemaster.

leave "simple fighter" to Bear totem barbarian.

Not IMO. I think barbarian should be a subclass or feat chain under the fighter class. But I think we only need 3-4 classes:
  • Warrior / Fighter
  • Arcane Magic User
  • Spiritual Magic User
  • Expert / Sage

it's a nice overview and attempt to merge reality with gameplay logics and that it does not need to meet 100% of the time.
also I agree with most suggestions on what mastery should go on what weapon.

and what I have stated many times here;
ALL crossbows/guns should be simple weapons.
ALL bows should be martial weapons.
And Staffs and spears are way underpowered vs reality. The reach a spear gives should put all swords at a severe disadvantage. Or give the wielder bonus armor to simulate the advantage of their reach.

He mentions that in the opening discussion of general items that D&D doesn't account for the advantages of reach. He points out inches make a difference (something my son who is in HEMA sword training now agrees with).
