d20 Past Question-

A couple of nice big furry shakos and lots o' turbans for one of my campaign ideas, pith helmets and kepis for another...

I wonder what the purchase DC will be for a deerstalker hat, Ulster coat and cravat? :)

What bothers me is this: sounds like a great product with lots and lots of info and ideas for doing a wide range of campaigns! But it is only 96 pages. :uhoh:

I'd like to find out what's in the book for campaign models and advanced classes. I kinda hope that we'll see the Pulp stuff that was in Poly ... but I hope they bypass the WWII stuff unless they go with a cool angle (ala Weird War II)

Anyone think the dragon from that photo looks a lot like Smaug from the old LOTR cartoon?
No, but I think the Spitfire on his six pumping thirty-cal up his poop chute is pretty funny.

I think we'd all like it if they released the book this week instead of next month rather than teasing us with previews!

:)

As far as adding fantastickal elements, I would prefer that they focus more on the historical elements - there are already two Modern hardcovers with spells and magic classes. That said, I'm guessing that there will be more magic, unfortunately, leaving historical roleplayers with fity to sixty useable pages of text.

I keep going back and forth on this.

Part of me says that they managed to cover quite a bit of ground in say any given 90 or so pages of d20 Future. The other 90% of me wishes this went to 256 pages.

I doubt this will have much impact on Wild Western roleplayers who have Sidewinder: Recoiled or on pirate gamers using Skull and Bones in the same way that d20 Apocalypse probably won't turn on a bunch of Darwin's World fans. This book will provide an introduction to a historical genre but I would still look to third-party publishers to take on more detailed views of the periods represented - for that reason I hope the Past material gets into the MSRD in a hurry.

I'm put off by how slim this is. 96 pages for 500 years seems ridiculously low.

Especially when it says it will contain three campaign ideas. If those are completely devoid of rules and nothing more than ideas, you would think they would have to still take up 5-8 pages each to be of any use. And if the rules for "d20 Past" are so generic that they can be used in Renaissance, Pirate, Napoleonic, Victorian, and World War Two... well, then I can't imagine they will be more helpful than some of the books already on my shelf (such as Grim Tales -- generic, but with lots of on/off rules switches allowing you to create games covering wide periods of history).

I would have much preferred a d20 Future-like treatment for this book.

Well...

I will buy it, regardless of the size, but I would prefer more content. I have to agree with Shaman, the Future book is pretty great considering it's size, so I have high hopes for Past. I would, however, prefer more depth in each time period.

If it's only 96 pages, I'm hoping for more crunch than fluff. Extensive equipment lists by period, for example, would be far more valuable to me than historical setting info I could easily find in the library or online, or has already been done before (Pulp, Victorian horror).
