D&D 5E Damaging Spells

just to reiterate, didn't mearls say that 5e 3rd level would be an equivalent to 3.x first levels? So basically if you don't want to go through what is essentially "tutorial levels (explaining the fundamental aspects of the class gradually)" begin the game at level 3. I can't find the link to that L&L article anyone got a link?

My thought was 'Wow that fireball is strong, might have to play a wizard some time.' My second thought was 'mwahaha I can't wait to have an Orc fireball the PCs'. All of these things are relative to the monsters they can expect to fight. In previous editions while there were some killer damage spells most of them paled compared to status effect spells, save/die etc. so I think it is ok that they look a little more beefy.
