Darkvision, Shadows and HiPS

True. And in the area of complete darkness, there would be no color. As to how darkvision might see a shadow of a lone tree in a sunny field....that's up to you.

No. You'll need to be more clear about the "two areas" you are talking about.

I thought that was pretty clear. I'm referring to the "20-foot radius of light" and the remaining area from 20' out to the limit of darkvision at 60'.

The shadow of the tree would clearly be perceived as a spot of black and white in a broader area of color.

...but as I look out my window, I can see the color of the grass in the shadow. And I'm pretty sure I don't have darkvision. :)

Yes they exist, independent of the viewer, BUT,

No buts. Your argument collapses just before the second comma. Try to argue - or even acknowledge - the "green" argument for fun and profit. :)

Question for the rules-folks: are we talking "local" shadows (those cast by torches, lanterns, bonfires, trees) or "global" shadows (those cast by the curvature of the planet, or several tons of rock serving as the dungeon ceiling)? I suspect the former.

Does HiPS work in total darkness? Based on my above opinion, I suspect not.

I don't know how correct I am, but I use the latter, generally. I'm fairly lenient with HiPS. I havn't had anyone with the ability in years though.

BTW, TheEvil: Do you read Sluggy? Just currious.
Sluggy? ;)
Once I saw the picture, I knew I had to change my username so I could use it as an appropriate avatar. :o
Yeah, I go a bit overboard with my fandom, though I am not yet a Supporter of the Nifty.

In my opinion as a player, no. However, one GM I played with ruled that the total darkness caused by being underground counted as shadow, so go figure.
