Denis Detwiller's "Ransom" was paid by one person? Cool!

I'm still of mixed feelings on this whole ransom model, it just seems... odd to me. Still, if publishers are using it to get paid for their products, more power to them.

Insylum sounds cool conceptually, but I'm not sure how much gaming one could get out of it. It sounds like the RPG equivalent of "No Exit". I'll download it of course, since it's free. :p Also, as a devout member of the Brotherhood of the Yellow Sign, I'm obligated to get any Hastur-derived product which involves art and madness.

Slight aside... is this how patronage used to work back in the day? I'd always thought that the artist would compose a nice poem to the Borgias, or whomever, and then hope for a gratuity. Maybe, after several such successes, they could go on to a court position, being the guy who distracts the guests while the poison is being handed out. That sort of thing.

Thinking about it this might be a good system to use for creating a variant Player's Handbook. Provide an outline of the project and wait until there are enough donations to cover the investment in time. Then put it together and release it as a free PDF.

Take things one step further and offer printed versions to everyone that donated at printing/shipping cost.

Count me in...sounds great.

This is the coolest thing I've heard since 3e was released several years ago. This idea has been used in the software world for a while, but it's much better suited for gaming and books.

Wow. Bump or something. :)

Hum, I guess that being not a native English speaker, and not seeing smileys or whatever, I didn't get the tongue-in-cheek tone. Yet, after reading the whole article, I am still convinced I would find the game worthless.

In any case, the "ransom" idea looks interesting. I could even be tempted to try it someday with a product of mine...

I had a look at his page and my first thought was, "Yep, it's Greg." Greg tends to see the world through a 'unique' perspective. His humor is a lot like Ray Bradbury's.

I think what I would do to test the concept first is a shorter product. Maybe something 32-pages. That way the ransom would have a smaller dollar amount.

That sounds reasonable. So when is the cut off date for donations for "Empty clips, Full graves"? :D
