You know what? I'm with him on this one. Not all of us are hardcore gamers. Some people just like to play casually - and it's cool if they only occasionally sift through their rulebook. It's really not hurting any of us to answer questions - if we don't feel like it, we don't.

That is what it's group is for, reading is for, self-educating is for. Anything less is leading to a continuation of it's ignorance and inablilty to grow as a human being.

If it continues asking questions, someone in here will start answering them [-]wrong[/-] humorously.

(I admit, it would be me if I had the time.)

Int stat modifier - does it subtract from yer gaming ability?

Only if your doing it right. ;)

Then we reserve the right to not answer stupid questions.

Exactly. Don't post. Don't make a guy who doesn't have the same rules mastery over the game as you feel stupid. If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all, and all that jazz.

Look, you can't tear a guy a new one just because he asked a question and doesn't have the same level of understanding of the game as you do. It's just a good way to alienate a new player to the game, and I don't think that's cool.

God knows I've asked some dumb questions when I was learning the game. For the longest time, I thought that the "hit Dice" entry in the 1e monster manual meant how many hit points a creature had; "1" meant 1 hit point. I didn't really know why they'd write down "1+1"... why not write down "2"? Boggled my mind. :)

1. Referring to a person as "It" is never cool. I know I'm assuming a lot with "he", but it's a helluva lot better than "it".
2. "Grow as a human being"? It's Dungeons and Friggin' Dragons, not spiritual growth.

I bet the players still rue the day you found out the truth :D

Well, at the time, I was running the solo dungeon in the 1e book, and hadn't actually played a game except with my dad (and when he ran it, he knew the rules). So, the only player who suffered from the revelation was myself.

I think I had to cheat more to keep my PCs alive after that. And it's a lot like cheating at solitaire, there. (I had a lot of 3rd level elven rangers who had +5 weapons, let me tell you!)

So, let him ask, and let's not pester him to read a rulebook if that's not what he wants to do with his spare time. I have at least two players at my table who haven't read the rulebook, and probably never will. One of them knows very little about the finer points of the game, and I'm cool with that.

So, yeah, I think some people here should lay off, and let the guy ask away. It's not our place to reprimand, or anything like that.

Cheers but I agree with the prople hassling me, as well as you :)

I am DM of a 2nd Edition campaign going for 7 years and a busy family man at home and at work, so am time constarined.

(The wife has gone back to work so I gotta do more child care and yucky housework, so its a full-on 6.30am to 9.30pm work day for me at present)

I have started out reading Rogue, Feats, The Martial Powers Book re Feats and Rogues, a quick flip through the PHB.

For the life of me I couldnt see the Initiative modifier thing under Dex, hence my question.
I was justtrolling re using your expertise, didnt realise how serious people would take my comments.

But thanks guys.

If time management is your biggest imediment to learning the rules, I think that for core concepts that have obvious, black and white answers, you would have faster results first consulting the index of the Player's Handbook. It isn't all that well indexed so the Table of Contents would be the second stop. I bet either of these options are much, much faster than logging onto Enworld, asking the question, etc.

Also, in the interest of time management I would retire the Martial Powers book and start with the quick start rules and a pregen character.
