D&D 5E Did you participate in the playtest?

Did you participate in the playtest?

I did not participate in the playtest, and so now I'm just getting caught up, and it's really weird. I like 5e so far, based on what I've read and the one Encounters session I've played in, but that's it.

I was wondering if there's anyone else who didn't participate in the playtest, but is now looking at the new edition.

I was going to, but I decided--for a variety of reasons--that, after devouring everything I could in advance of 3E, and after having worked on 4E before the core was released, I really wanted to approach 5E completely blind, as a fan.

I'm glad I did. I'm getting more excitement out of the process than I have since 1E. :D

I answered "both". I participated in the sense that I downloaded all of the playtest packets, and read through them, but I didn't have a chance to play any games using the rules. I did answer the various questionnaires that WotC sent out, and tried to provide meaningful answers where possible, whilst at the same time, steering clear of questions that I didn't think I could fairly answer without having seen the playtest packets in action.

I downloaded and read all the packets, but the last time I played (before getting the Starter Set) was around April 2013, so I never tested the last packets.

I'm getting a lot of excitement out of the process as well. It's mostly been a DDN/5e news blackout for me. So much so that I was shocked when I found out the Starter Set was for sale, the Sunday after it was released to WPN stores. I've spent the past week devouring the 5e Basic rules.

And it's nice reading a (mostly) complete ruleset with fresh eyes. Also, I'm not fatigued from discussing it on forums.

It looks like I'm outnumbered though. Most people who've responded did participate in the playtest. So, if you don't mind me asking, how does the Basic game compare to the various playtest packets? Is it the game you expected? Have the rules surprised you?

Participated throughout the process; played many 1- and 2-session games with different groups (including kids), as DM and as player; offered feedback on each packet.

Same as Plaguescarred, from Friends & Family (Alpha) through all the Beta, and still playtesting. (There is more to D&D than just the PHB)

I've kept half an eye on 5e since the beginning, but I knew from the start that it was a game meant for a different audience. So I decided that getting involved in the play test would be swimming upstream, and that avoiding it was best for my sanity.

The basic rules have confirmed the wisdom of my judgment.

I did all of the public playtests with a stable group. The hardest part is remembered all of the little changes and reading the rules with fresh eyes each time.

Thaumaturge.
