Do you care?

Heck no...

It often depends on the character in question, but for a concept I have taken the time to develop I hate losing them. I usually don't begin really developing a character concept until they have been around for a while and have a defining moment (A defining moment being a critical situation where they shine such as finishing off a bad guy in a near death fight or surviving a series of death spells). Then I start to build on the surviving character writing up a more in-depth background and fleshing out a personality.

Once I reach the point where the character has a few to several pages of background and has survived several adventures, I will be very unhappy if they die. I personally don't like to have characters that have been ressurected, so dying even once is something I do my best to avoid. I've only had one or two characters that have managed to pull off never dying. One is my favorite character of all time and the other is pretty high on the list as well. I still have plenty of characters I really liked that have died and been ressurected. I still hate dying, but at least there is a way to come back.

In your case, where ressurection is not an option, I hope the DM gives you a fair chance to escape your predicament. Escaping a deadly situation against impossible odds will make you love your characrer even more.

This is a Midnight game, so there is no raising if I die. Unless of course I come back as a Fell, in which case we have an interesting moment, because my best friend would probably have to kill me the second time around. :)

I shall miss Jez if she dies, but the sad thing is not so much losing the character, but knowing that I won't feel so inclined to put the same amount of effort into the next one.

Hi Randomling - I feel the same way, I'd be really sorry to lose Zana if she died - and sorry to lose Jez too! :)
I don't play that much and it always really hurts me to lose a PC, it hasn't happened to me all that often. In fact I can only think of one PC I've lost in the past several years - Squire Varioth, a 3rd level Fighter. I really liked him and when he got turned into a ghoul & dusted I went into post-trauma mode and made my new PC Telak a Cleric, in 3.0; ie a total Munchkin-build character with all those ridiculous Buffs. Telak didn't die but I was never that attached to him, I'd wanted to play an heroic young knight, not a munchkin-spell-monkey which was the only way to stay alive in that campaign (DM had no DMG so there were no magic items!).

Have not palyed midnight, but I heard that it's a setting with very little hope. The bad guys are in a position of incredible power and usally end up winning. That said losing a character in this setting should be anticipated.

Yes, Randomling & me are the only players still with our starting PCs (Jez & Zana), the other 3 players have all lost 1 or 2 PCs.

That'd be nice. :)

The bad guys haven't killed us yet, anyway, and I've got them thoroughly confused with my claim that _we're_ baddies too & we thought _they_ were the goodies, that's why we attacked them...

So how much do other people care when their PC dies? Have you had specific characters that you were particularly sad to lose?
Not much. But I've been rpging for 27 years. I've lost a lot of characters :) To me, it's just an opportunity to start another adventure.

That was a nice ploy. (It's crazy, but it might just work!) :D

If Jez does die, I'm not going to let it dampen my enthusiasm, though. I will put just as much effort into the next character - possibly a Sarcosan rogue/channeller. :)

IMO though there's a worse option - Jez living and Zana dying. Jez'd be devastated.

I once played a game of L5R that was so tight and driven that people shed a few real tears when one of our party members died. It took a minute before we could go on. And no one had the heart at that time to turn to the guy and say "just roll up a new character." That was an awesome game!

Wow,that´s really intense and cool!

For me it's more about how they die. If a character gets a good death that fits how they lived (for example if a more heroic character dies saving someone) then I'm usually quite content.

Besides, creating characters is one of the most enjoyable parts of the game for me. I usually have at least one backup character ready (which usually prompts dms to look confused and ask me if I'm bored with the character I have :))

It really bothers me when a player feigns disinterest in their current character. I have a player in my campaign that comments every time his character is in peril, "Oh well, I have another character I want to try anyway." Not sure why it bothers me so much, as long as he is playing and having fun so what. I guess I just want the players to invest interest into their character because I invest in the campaign.
