Note: I do not represent WotC or any other company producing RPG products. I would describe myself as a 'loyal D&D fan'.

{Edit} Throughout the poll I meant to refer to Fantasy RPGs. I am not comparing D&D to stuff like Star wars d20, Gamma World, etc.

I've seen a lot of references to non-D&D FRPGs on these messageboards. Unfortunately, I know almost nothing about such products. My only experience was a brief Tunnels and Trolls session 20 years ago. I'm curious about Lejendary Adventures, though.

Could somebody list all the non-D&D/d20 fantasy RPGs that exist now or have existed? Give some info if it's not too much trouble; if you use an acronym, explain it. Also, it'd be nice to know famous poeple involved in the RPG, significant rules differences, if it was attached to a particular setting, etc.

Much obliged.

My selection

I can't give you a list of all existing rpg's, but I can get you started by giving you the ones I play/DM in:

As a DM I use DnD3E

As a player I have characters running in
- AD&D2e
- Ars Magica
- Warhammer Fantasy RPG
- Call of Cthulhu

At some point in time I've had characters running in 7th Sea & Deadlands.

Uhhh... hoo boy... *tugs at his collar*... that's one... doozy... of a question.

I mean... And I no means have played the most different games here, quite the opposite, have played and/or own the following:

BESM*
Shadowrun*(It's sci-fantasy... elves and magic, lasers and cyborgs)
Earthdawn*
Legend of the Five Rings (It existed before D20)*
Deadlands (Same)*(It's western fantasy)
Fading Suns (Same)*(Sci fantasy)
Starwars (Same, and I prefer the original, honestly)
Amber*
Ars Magica*(psuedo-historical fantasy)
Feng Shui*(Modern fantasy, magic and kung fu and cyborgs and monsters)
Rolemaster*
Rifts
Palladium Fantasy*
Nightbane
Beyond the Supernatural
Robotech
System Shock
Jadeclaw*
Ironclaw*
In Nomine*(Pseudo-religios modern fantasy)
GURPS*
FUDGE*
Vampire: The Masquerade
Vampire: Dark Ages*
Changeling: The Dreaming*
Werewolf: The Wild West
Werewolf: The Apocolypse
Mage: Sorcerer's Crusade*
Mage: The Ascention
Wraith: The Oblivian
Exalted*
Trinity
Hunter: The something or other
Mummy: The something or other
Buffy RPG
All Flesh Must Be Eaten
Jovian Chronicals
Heavy Gear
Tribe 8*
Gear Krieg
Hong Kong Action Theater
Silver Age Sentinals
HERO system*
Talislanta*
Tenra Bansho Zero
RuneQuest*
Warhammer Fantasy RP*
ElfQuest*

*edit* Problem is, the definition of fantasy is kinda nebulous.

Ummm... I know I'm forgetting a few that I've played, but thats
the ones that come to mind. And thats not a very inclusive list, by any means.

Whoaaaaaaaaa!

Thanks for the info.

I never imagined there were so many!!! I had heard of Ars Magica and a few others, but...

I've seen GURPS mentioned a lot; what is that?

Also, I've seen references to a CODA game system--what is that?

johnsemlak: and this is just the surface! There are so many obscure fantasy games, I don't think any people exist who have them all.

Hmmm... sorry about that. I'll go back and put a "*" by the ones that either are fantasy are will work for it.

Yeah, I guess my request to list and give details on EVERY FRPG was a bit unrealistic.

Still, I hope people send in lots of info.

Would anybody be able to boil down the list of all FRPGs into the significant ones? I.e. the more popular ones.

NP. Like I said though, the definition of fantasy is sorta... out there.

I mean, of that list, only Robotech, Heavy Gear, Gear Krieg, Jovian Chronicals... well, that's really the only ones that don't have some element of "fantasy"... supernatural monsters, or magic-wielding people, or something along those lines.

Then you have the ones that manage to fall nicely in the middle, like Shadowrun... With all your normal fantasy elements... elves, dwarves, magic, dragons, etc in a cyber-punky near future.

Then you have ones like Mage: Sorcerer's Crusade and Ars Magica... fantasy in that they have magic and spirits and stuff, not fantasy in that they take place in our own worlds history.

Then you got your universal systems... BESM, GURPS, FUDGE, HERO, etc... which can easily be used for a fantasy game, but can just as easily do superheros or something else.
