Why would I want to play a human in a game that is my means of escaping reality?

I've been playing a human for most of my life.

Sure, but do you beg your DM to let you play a Gelatinous Cube because that's the fartherest thing from yourself you can find in the game?

Or do you beg to play a spell book? (^_^)

I like to play a PC that is like me in some ways, but unlike me in other ways. We simply choose to draw the line in different places.

Frankly, even the least different D&D PC is still so mind-bogglingly different from me to be an adequate escape from reality for me. (^_^)

Definite human preference, at least in practice. I dig the idea of playing other races, sure, but I really dislike most of the standard PHB races. Half-orcs are pretty cool, but they really get screwed over, mechanically. And all those Tolkieny demihumans just bother me.

Yeah, I usually play human. I find the extra feat and skill too attractive - not in meta-gaming terms mind you. Typically the special abilities of the other races tend to put them into a stereotypical slot that I may not prefer for my character. In other words, with a non-human, the feat is chosen for me (be it infra-vision or whatever) while with a human, I can have virtually any character concept without feeling penalized.

I never play human. I mainly played elves, but I really cant stand the hit to con, but I found a race I really like that I think replaces them well. I think they are called Kilorean from races of the wild (i just ignore the picture and write my own flavor). Our dm lets us take flaws, but i may be temped to play a human if she didn't.

I prefer humans in 3.x D&D for the extra feat and skill points. However, I like the idea of playing other races. If I thought the races were balanced, I'd probably not play humans at all.

Probably already said by others (so sue me for not reading the entire thread)...

I almost always play human because I've yet to be convinced that the racial bonuses of other core races outweigh the bonus feat, bonus skill points, & freedom from multiclass XP penalties (yes, some DMs do use them) which humans receive. I wish that there was a core race which could, IMO, match this, as it would make a nice change. I did play a halfling once, but the speed penalty from small size hurt, & even as a rogue I found the decreased damage discouraging (granted, this was at low levels where it makes the most difference for a rogue).

For Eberron, it's a different matter. I've played a changeling (very fun), & currently have a warforged -- though does it count if he thinks he's human? ;)
