Spoilers Doctor Who 2024 (spoilers)

William Hartnell didn't exactly do a lot of running. He'd have broken a hip.

Oddly, Hartnell's Doctor was actually referred to as Doctor Who by a rogue computer.

The Hartnell episodes I have seen I quite liked. He is definitely a different flavor of Doctor than the more recent ones (except maybe Capaldi). I think the running probably started with the second doctor

The running started with Patrick Troughton.

The Doctor was credited as “Doctor Who” for a lot of years. I think in the Peter Cushing films that’s his name as well. He’s called Doctor Who.
I don't recall actually hearing anyone say the full name, in the Cushing films, but with effort I could hear the the computer say it in "The War Machines."

Donna's season is very interesting. I like her combination of feistiness and vulnerability. I also do like her tragic exit, though I think the show developed a bad habit of always having those.
Donna is my favorite. I love that she has no romantic interest in The Doctor whatsoever, and gives him lip all the time.

Have you watched the three 60th anniversary specials with Tennant and Tate? Davies redeems himself a bit there.

I like her too. Martha is my favorite but Donna is also up there. I also liked Martha's unrequited storyline. Overall I thought they made the right move with each subsequent companion in that respect (though I am not sure how I feel about Rose ending up with The Doctor's hand----that felt a little like one of those cocaine induced storylines

I haven't yet. But in principle I generally oppose these kinds of moves (if you are going to do an emotional ending for something or kill off a character, my view is you should stick with it or it loses its punch). I realize DW does that all the time of course, but it is one of the things I find irritating about the show

Sooo... Ncuti Gatwa's first full season has arrived with two episodes -- Space Babies, and The Devil's Chord.

What did we think?

Space Babies was kinda silly--in the same way that RTD's 2005 intro with Eccleston and the animated wheelie bins were silly. It was quite expositiony, which I suppose was needed for new viewers. I felt Ruby was fully onboard with the whole concept very, very quickly. Both actors were really fun and charming...

This series definitely has a more fairytale 'Buffy' vibe than the sci-fi vibe of previous iterations of the show. At least so far. The preview for next week looks like it involves a sci-fi warzone.

I'm just arriving at the start of this season, and I want to say: despite my doubts, I really enjoyed Space Babies. I found it a perfect balance of sincere and silly, and the freshest-feeling thing I've seen in years from this venerable series.

It's therefore the first time I feel glad/hopeful to have RTD back in charge.

TBD whether he can sustain my interest. I really hope so!

Companions did a fair bit of running - see The Dalek Invasion of Earth for example.

But that has more location shooting than most. Small sets and extremely bulky cameras were a bigger restriction than Hartnell’s bad leg.

The majority of the Hartnell episodes are still missing though, and I don’t think any of us are old enough to remember the original broadcasts.

Yes, Wotan uses “Doctor Who” as a proper name. But Wotan is an AI with magic mind control powers, which probably explains it. Later on, it’s occasionally said, or nearly said (Doctor.. what?) as a joke.

I remember it being nearly said or said as an actual question (Doctor... who you say?), but that was the only time I can remember it being said straight up, as a name.

Missy insisted "Doctor Who" was the Doctor's real name. She was probably just seeing how gullible Bill was, but still, take it for what it's worth.

That kind of takes the amazement out of River Song whispering his name in his ear lol
