does anyone think sunder is too easy?

At high levels what chance does a rogue have against a fighter? What chance does ANYONE have to keep their weapon against someone with a higher base attack bonus assuming equal strength and weapon enhancement? (hehe, please don't quote actual statistics)
I guess my point is, does anyone think it's way too easy for higher level characters to completely sunder a +5 weapon in one attack? Longsword vs. Longsword at +5 means you only have to do 25 damage to break it. 5 of that will come from your own sword, another 10 or more from weapon specialization and strength alone. That's just mean! It's even worse if it's a dagger or short sword.

Why wait for high levels?

Striking a weapon is way too easy at any level. A sunder focused PC will destroy any villains weapons in round one of combat(assuming he's got an =+ weapon). A sunder focus villain will remove at least 2 CR from your party by destroying all that expensive weaponry(and shields, and armors, and items....)

Sunder is almost worse than Disjunction as a game ender.

How is a 1st level character going to do 25 pts of damage in one round with a melee attack?

I think it's a non-issue.

Let's face it, if he wasn't attacking the weapon, he'd be attacking the villain, and the bad guy would die that much sooner. As it is, not only is the PC removing a magic weapon from your game, he's keeping the villain around slightly longer and having fun doing so. How is this a bad thing?

In a game I played last weekend, the bad guy had a crossbow. The fighter sundered it.
So he pulled a long sword. The fighter sundered it.
So he pulled a great axe... and knocked the fighter unconscious. then he proceeded to lay waste to the party with a weapon that he wouldn't otherwise have been using!

As far as I can tell, a PC using sunder is only a positive thing for the campaign. A DM using sunder, though, could become a thorn in the PCs' sides. :)

i see what you're saying...
i guess i'm just afeared because my group of friends has a long history of attacking each other...not to mention the weapon master has a +5 weapon and the rest of us do not...

He's not, but a 2nd level character can pull it off easy.

Taking away the villains ability to do damage, takes away the challenge. Which takes away the fun.
Once in a while I enjoy the one-shot-one-kill sudden endings to a fight. With a Sunder focused PC, it quickly becomes every fight.

Thats an awful lot of weaponry to be carrying around. And it looks like you got lucky and the FTR failed a roll to Sunder the greataxe.
Now if the FTR succeeds at that sunder attempt, youve suddenly reduced a BBEG to fighting with a toothpick.

A DM using sunder, though, could become a thorn in the PCs' sides. :)

or loses a lot of players...
or runs a Monty Haul campaign where losing a +3 Weapon is a trifle...

I see reasons for the ability to be there, its just way to easy to accomplish.

It looks to me like the fighter never got an attack on the greataxe.

Fighter takes a crossbow bolt and advances. Fighter takes another crossbow bolt, charges, and sunders the crossbow.

Enemy quickdraws longsword and makes three attacks on the fighter.

Fighter sunders longsword and makes two attacks on the enemy.

Enemy quickdraws greataxe and makes three attacks on the fighter, knocking him unconscious... and proceeds to lay waste to the party.

Thats possible too.

Tho if youve got that many attacks, Why waste time with a X-bow?
Jus use a reqular bow and the FTR wont make it there to Sunder.... :D
