[Dragon] Lord, the cheese...

In some ways yes and in some ways no. Most Americans who are aware of it find Hentei and schoolgirl panty porn offensive, but OTOH Playboy as it is published in America is considered hardcore in Japan as showing pubic hair is rather more taboo.

The fundamental point here is that different cultures have different values. That does not mean those values should be ignored as invalid because we recognize how subjective they are.

Haven't been to Japan in a few years, eh? There is no longer 'blur' over images. I have seen it, been there, no biggie anymore.

What's a house, car, means to enjoy life with your wife, or food for your children compared to every man's RIGHT to read Dragon Magazine at work? Nice to see at least some people have their priorities squared away.

I think you're missing my point. Is any job better than no job? Of course. That goes without saying.

However, is a job where you can be fired for reading an innofensive magazine like Dragon worse than a job where they don't care what you read as long as it's not offending other staff?

I think so...

Well sure, but someone on this thread was actually advocating throwing away everything he had in his life over the principle of reading Dragon at work...(!)

There are some jobs I would never take, but if I have to choose between supporting the girl of my dreams or showing my coworkers the kewl new prestige class in the latest Dragon....

Yeah that's when the principle of being a good husband outweighs the right to bear sultry succubi... ;)

Equal benefits to everyone you say? Looks like women get the btter end of the deal on a hot summers day. In the Netherlands there were a few postmen who wore skirts in order to demonstrate how skewed the dress code really was.

Men working for the post can now wear bermuda shorts in the summer.

[stopping the hijack right here, just felt I needed to share :)]

That was not at all what I was advocating. I said that I wouldn't accept such a job in the first place. And it goes far beyond the ability to read Dragon at work. If you aren't allowed to read maxim, vogue, or some other magazine that is sold in grocery stores, then they are clearly so conservative and buttoned up that the company culture itself could not possibly be healthy. I can't imagine going to work and being afraid that some minor thing I say or do will offend the management to the point that it will get me fired. And if it is so restrictive and they're so quick to fire people, then it's entirely possible that they don't care so much about their staff.

Hence my statement that I would never work for such a company. There are always alternatives that don't require selling one's soul or to avoid living on the streets.

That thread is still here ? I'm bewildered.

Here's a little blue angel of peace to make sure everyone stay gentle and civil in that strange debate.

I have to say buzz, that I liked the cover. It should be sexy. It's a sucubus. I do understand your point. I had to hide it, the magazine, from my kids. I don't want them seeing that stuff yet. They will soon enough.

hide it from your kids????? Why? She's not even naked!
Boy, I guess Americans really are puritans - ten minutes of German (or French, Spanish, etc.) tv commercials would probably cause heartattacks over there... ;)

Where I work, you can get fired for reading Cosmo, or several other publications, including muscle/fitness magazines. National Geographic is on the "No, just in case" list.

We're one of the most conservative businesses in the world, and the largest business of its type in the country. Nothing that could potentially offend anyone in terms of skin, cleavage, shorts... Even to the point where shorts in summer and such are banned, and skirts must be knee-length, certain types of sheer fabrics utterly banned, etc. And our facility will never, ever have a customer inside... We only ever see each other.

The flip side is, we were one of the first companies to extend equal benefits to everyone. We have a comprehensive GLBT clause that makes couples and individuals in those situations considered no differently than straight couples in terms of medical insurance, 401K, etc. So its worth having to screen which issues of Dragon I can read at work. :)
Ouch, my normal periodical reading material wouldn't go well there at all (Maxim, Dragon, Console Gaming Mags, etc). ;)

I guess that's a problem that a place like that will have with a magazine like Dragon. Every so often you are going to get something that could possibly offend someone (woman or man with not a ton of clothes on). And not just on the cover. Some of the ads are just as bad (not just in Dragon). It just goes with the territory the way I see it. :)
