Dragonstar...anyone still playing it? Did you play it?

I have the set, and have played. Combat is indeed brutal, but the game was a *lot* of fun, imo. It was definitely D&D in space though. These days, I'd probably borrow the setting information, but use D20Modern+Future for the mechanics.

Have all the books (BEFORE they sold them as a set... *grumblegrumble*) and played a campaign that made it to 8th level before outside factors shut it down. It's now my all time favorite setting :).

Combat is very deadly, especially when the fighter figured out that suppressive fire w/ his light machinegun worked better than melee. Our charm focused sorcerer generally ran like he**. We did have some great RP moments though (the pilot who wins his ship in a drinking contest---after he spikes his opponents drinks!).

I really enjoyed it I both played in and ran Living Dragonstar and ran Raw Recruits for awhile. I was sad to see it go. Hopefully FF will come around with some more product even if only in PDF form or they will license other producers like they did with Mind's Eye.

You and me both, Salcor. But I'm afraid that if Mystic Eye does ever return, it will have little interest in putting out an adventure for a "dead" property. I'd email you the Veterans manuscript but then assassins would likely hunt me down. ;)
 

I have all the books and I intend to run a campaign derived from it. Most of the "fluff" I won't be using, but the mechanics mesh well with the campaign world I use (see the .sig) for campaigns in that world's future.
 

Word of warning: If you play 3.0, rethink the shambling mounds CR. My players had mostly ranged energy weapons, since they were noncombat oriented (pilot, mechanist, sorcerer, rogue, bard, and ranger/rogue). Shambling mound had Fire resistance and feeds off of electricity. Guess what types of damage all nonmagical energy weapons do...

Almost TPK'd my party with two of them. :o

The look on the player's face was priceless (their opening attack was a blue halfdragon breath weapon) :].

I LOVED it. I played the RPGA Living Dragonstar game and ran a home game once, but my players seemed more interested in D&D.

I ran a Dragonstar Campaign titled "The Last Emperor" for about 9 months. It started as a short between-game thing, which got expanded. It worked and the players had a lot of fun playing: merchant trades of shady goods, demon hunting, evil half dragon lead secret project cleanup teams, and exploding stars. The setting is a blast.

On the downside, the system feels patched together, as the modern weapons vastly overshadow the combat abilities of spell casters until high level, and the odd effects of the increasing hit points. My group aren't the biggest D20 fans and I heard many complains about how poorly the system handled. A group more comfortable with the D20 system and willing to work through the system holes it should work fine however.
 

Love it, got most of the books, but I've never played it. Nowadays, I would probably just raid it for feats, spells, etc. and build my own hybrid Dragonstar/d20 Future/True20/Blood & Space campaign. :D
