Dual and Multiclass Level cap problems.

I'm new, and all that jaz, but thats not my problem.

I'm about to run a 3E D&D game with 2 players, they both are dual class. One of them has a real problem with the level 20 cap for dual and multiclass characters. He argues that they just wont be powerfull enough to handle the same things that a level 20 single class character can handle.

I understand that they most likely wont even reach that level for a LONG time, and even then there is the Epic Level book. But he just doesnt see it. He's stubborn, and I dont want to loose 1 of my 2 players. Also he is a DM as well and he wont use 3E for the same reason.

What should I do?

So, he thinks that 10/10 character is weaker then a level 20 character? WEll, he's right and he's wrong. It depends on the classes. Multi classing a spellcaster and losing spell levels is a big drawback. However a 10fighter/10 rogue is a very powerful character in his versatility.

Yeah thats his major argument. a 10/10 fighter/sorcerer would get killed by the same things a level 20 fighter or a level 20 sorcerer would waste.

He wants to have the same split that earlier D&D editions had.

Tell him to sit on a tack.

The Fighter/Mage/Thief and Fighter/Mage were way too stinking powerful in ADnD. I know. I'm a twink. (My bladesinger was nuts.)

In earlier editions a 10/10 fighter/wizard would get slaughtered by anything a level 20 whatever would face. Now a days a 10/10 anything has a much better chance of survival.

The difference now a days is more along with personal choice. I can make a 10fighter/10sorcer that will own a 20th level fighter in melee combat. With the sorcer take a bunch of biuff spells and dispels, increase your own power while getting rid of the fighters. It is not a 100% think, but it can be done.

Yes but in the old days, a 10/10 would have the same xp as a Level 12 single-classed fighter or mage.

If you gave a fighter/mage the same xp as a level 20 fighter or wizard, they'd be about level 16/16. It was too nuts.

Yes, but in the old style a 10/10 character wouldnt be stuck at 10/10. They would keep going.

Ah, so that's his problem. Dual classed characters have been totally redifined and can not be compared to older systems. He's making rash judgements having absolutely no experience playing.
