"Perhaps. Or they might just be calling their forces together. They may yet wait until we're back in the forest tomorrow...no doubt they'd prefer to fight us there."

"Yes, that ogre should be our priority, second only to keeping goblins out of the compound, even a couple could cause untold problems for us."

Hiddel walked over, "You recoken you gave them a bloody nose and that they be a looking fer ye now?" he asked. "Quite possibly, or as Shara says, they're gathering their forces. Neither option bodes well for us.

Magen thinks about Shara's suggestion that the warband may be waiting to ambush the party in their own territory. "That's not a fun thought either, on the plus side there will be less for us to worry about: cattle, children... For tonight I think all we can do is post a double watch. If they don't come tonight, I'd rather spend the time tomorrow scouting than fortifying here, I just don't think we could do enough in time, not to mention the risk to other homesteaders."

Turning back to Hiddel asks, "Do you have anything to shore up the gate?

Hiddell scratches his beard and is silent for a moment. Finally he looks at Megan and replies "I suppose I gots a couple of logs that we brought in for replacing any on the palisade that need replacing. They be in the barn there. They should work. I could get a couple of the lads to go cut us some more in the morning..."

As the others head to the barn to get the logs, Shara stops at the lower house to retrieve two leather pouches from her pack. When she gets to the barn, she hands one to Magen and the other to Hunter.

"Before I forget," she says as she hands them out. "You can use the bandages and salves in these to help the gravely wounded. Hopefully you won't have to, because that's what I'm here for. But if things have gone badly for me, you should have these."

OOC: I bought two healer's kits since I'll be taking the Healer feat at level 4, but they're useless for me until then, since I can stabilize with a cantrip. Might as well hand them out in case the going gets rough.

Taking the leather pouch from Shara Hunter nodded, “Hopefully we won’t need these,” he said as he took the pouch.
“To be honest I’ve taken a bit of punishment earlier and as soon as we get this gate secured, I’d like to catch some rest. If no one objects I’ll take the third watch.”

"My squire can help get the gate barricaded, tomorrow he can go with your lads to lend a hand, and offer some protection. At this Edgar darts off to be of use.

Shara offered him a healers kit in case of emergency, "Prudent," replies Magen as way of a thank you "I have a healing drapht as well that may prove useful in an emergency. Let's hope we need neither.

"I'd like to catch some rest." said Hunter. "Yes, Magen agreed, "We could all use some, I'll take the fourth watch. Make sure we have some means to alert everyone, should we get attacked."

What do you normally do at night? Magen asked Hiddel, "Good walls are only as good as the men defending them. We're here making plans, but have no idea what yours are."

Hunter nodded as Magen spoke, he admired the young man, he was a bit rash and impulsive, the perils of youth, but he was thoughtful. The entire group had earned his respect and so had this humble homesteader Hiddel.

“Yes, good sir,” Hunter began with a small nod towards Hiddel. “We are but your guests, this is your homestead, you better than any of us will know best how to defend it.”

Mikel Hadn't needed a familiar in a very long time, they were more of a nuisance in the library than they were a boon, but now that he was out in the world once more it seemed high time he called Artemis back into the mortal realm. He wasn't sure how the common folk felt about magic so he preformed the ritual out of sight as best he could, tossing the incense into the fire and chanting the arcane words and gestures that called his old companion from the celestial realm. The fire and smoke began to take on a corporeal form, feathers, beak and talon taking shape at last.

"Keep watch over us tonight old friend, there are creatures about that want us dead."

The heroes help the ranchers set up heavy log, bracing them against the only gate and strengthening them a great deal. It is doubtful that even an ogre could knock them down now.

With that done and the watches set, the rest of the group heads off for what little sleep they might get. The first two watches pass uneventfully, although a cold light rain starts to fall on Lucious's watch. Then, late during Hunter's turn in the watchtower the bard sees a shape moving in the darkness and approaching the homestead. He can tell that it is a wolf or large dog, but cannot make out any additional details...

GM: Secret: 1D20+5 = [3]+5 = 8 vs. Hunter's Passive Perception. At the present time the animal is about 100 feet away from the back wall (opposite the gate) and will drop out of line of sight from Hunter if it gets closer then 50 feet...

It was cold and wet as Hunter stood wrapped tightly in his traveling cloak. Out of the corner of his eye he sees what appears to be a wolf approaching the back wall.

Swallowing hard Hunter squinted his eyes against the rain and carefully tracked the wolf with the crossbow Shara had given him. The bolt flew quickly in the direction of the animal and he shouted out, “We may have company!”

OOC:

Hunter fires a bolt at the wolf/dog, I am assuming disadvantage at this distance, if he’s 100 feet from the wall than he is even further away from Hunter, at least in my mind.

Crossbow attack: 1d20+5 10
Crossbow attack: 1d20+5 12
Damage on Hit: 1d8+3 5

Also I’m assuming we only got a short rest, but would not mind being wrong.
