E-Tools: What can it do?

Hey all

I am considering getting E-Tools to help me prep (since I am now running 2 campaigns) and I was wondering what people thought of the current version. i checked the reviews database and there doesn't seem to be anything current. So

Is it useful?
Is it flexible?
Is it supported?
What can it do?
What can't it do?

Thanks.

I personally find it invaluable. I use it as a PC, I use it as a DM, I use it for gaming prep.

Is it flexible?

Depends on what you mean by flexible. I've managed to finagle warlocks and racial substitution levels to work by manipulating the database and using ETHelper. But I've also created a cold iron, +2 holy tablespoon in the Purchase screen inside of eTools. I've been able to create new races, familiars and monsters all from within eTools itself. It all depends on what you're trying to do and how much time you want to invest truely learning the system

Is it supported?

Extemely so. Code Monkey Publishing has released additional datasets for purchase for almost every WotC published book out. The also release bug fixes every other month. There's not really too much wrong with just the program but when you have hundreds of data sets all interacting with each other than there is always a few thing here and there. You post a question or problem in their forums and 90% of the time it's answered same day.

What can it do?
What can't it do?

Thanks.

For this I would recommend browsing thier forums and their site.

eTools Program Overview

What can it do: help you create characters, monsters, advanced monsters, monster/class combos and generate stat blocks or character sheets for such

What it can't do: pretty much anything else

Useful: it was incredibly useful for me as DM. The easiest part of my DMing job was churning out stats thanks to e-tools.

Flexible: not really. You can add certain kinds of custom data, to a greater or lesser degree. You can add new races/monsters, equipment, spells, feats, etc. pretty easily but sometimes the functionality of these items (particularly feats and magic items) is somewhat limited. A third-party free product -- Davin's "ET Helper" is a must for doing other kinds of additions, particularly new classes. There's a pretty steep learning curve for something as advanced as that.

Supported: yes, by Code Monkey Publishing. They provide frequent data updates though there are no more code updates scheduled as they are now working on a new program to kind of "replace" Etools.

It is not a perfect program by any means -- there have been, from the beginning, many code issues and data acuracy problems. It takes a lot of practice and trial and error to get things just the way you like them. Modifying the output styles (the stat block or character sheet styles) is nothing short of torturous if you don't know XML stuff. It is definitely not for everyone.

Thanks, guys. I am still on the fence, but I know I need a utility program to smooth out prep.

So, what alternatives are there? I don't mind paying for a software suite as long as it is worth the dollars in utility.

Well, there's PCGen (which is free), but I'm biased. Code Monkey Publishing also sells official WotC datasets for PCGen.

On eTools, you should know that CMP is working on new CharGen called RPGT. Once that comes out, all new work on eTools will cease. eTools will be supported for 2 years (I think that's right) after RPGT's emergence. There will be a window of time that will allow you to freely convert your PCGen or eTools datasets to RPGT datasets. If you miss the window, you'll have to buy them.

Now, other products that I'm aware of: Red Blade, Campaign Suite, DM's Familiar, DMGenie and the forthcoming RPGXplorer. I believe that all of these are commercial ventures.

To my knowledge, CMP is the only company that has rights with WotC to create datasets based upon their closed content books. Assuming that I'm correct, if you want to have data based on a WotC book, you'll have to code it yourself or, if you have PCGen and/or eTools, buy the datasets from CMP.

Hope that helps.

Right now, E-Tools is a pretty useful, powerful program. The ability to buy the add-ons of WoTC products to update the program (I have the XPH addon for example) makes it doubly useful.

Can you offer a few ideas of the most common things you'd use it for? That way we could tell you exactly whether it would cover those eventualities.

While I am a big fan of GINORMOUS MONSTERS, my players prefer humanoid, classed enemies -- so I would need it for putting together everything from Goblin Rog2 to an epic Githyanki Monk. Plus, I tend to create new templates to tweak existing creatures, as well as new feats and PrCs to get the effect I am going for. Also, I wouldn't mind a utility that can give out 'stat blocks' for traps and other non-monster challenges, or even create city stat blocks per the DMG.

As long as the thread has turned into a comparison discussion, here's what I'm looking for:
  • Handles spell points and psionics
  • Handles armor as DR (from UA)
  • Handles weapon groups (from UA)
  • Handles class defense (not from UA, more like Star Wars, but different math)
  • Nice output sheet(s) (HeroForge is the measure, here -- must neatly fill the pages, but not overflow)
  • Flexible enough to work with expansion, custom, or modified classes/PrCs
  • Handles all the monsterous races, too.
  • Ability to add new weapons, armor, feats, etc. or modify existing entries
  • Good interface or mark-up language for doing the above
  • Rule, character, and campaign files that are easy to manage and email.

PCGen is flexible enough to do a lot of the customization (I've actually gotten it to accept all my house rules), but the mark-up language is somewhat cumbersome. And doing anything significant definitely requires a text-editor. The output sheets are universally horrid, with columns jutting about unevenly, vast amounts of whitespace, and the occasional overflowing page. I'm pretty sure that I could get a nice layout, with some creative use of tables/divs and styles, but I'm more interested in getting the rules functional. Getting just the right settings for the UI can be a pain, too. The features are all there, though, just a bit rough.

HeroForge was probably the easiest to use character generator -- for humanoids -- that I've seen. Every single person I know that used it found it to be almost completely intuitive. The character sheet was near perfection, too. Unfortunately, it was pretty bloated by the time you got extra rules in, made it nigh impossible to roll out updates to existing characters, and was prohibitive for players w/o high-speed Internet to email their characters. Making complex updates, like spell points, was probably more difficult than doing so in PCGen, too.

I haven't bought any tools, though I have tried several of the demos. In general, though, most seemed to have a clunky interface (which I will not pay for) or not enough customization options. At least, that was my opinion last time I looked at a demo.

I'm excited about RPGX and RPGT, though. RPGX looks amazing. The interface promises to be superb, at least for players. And the character sheet is very attractive -- the weapon format annoys me, but the rest is outstanding. My main concern is that it won't handle psionics and skill points upon release. That'll come out in a couple of months. I'm also not entirely convinced that the system is as flexible as I'd like it, but the jury's still out on that -- I'm still hoping to find a way to do mathematic progressions of class features, rather than entering them in at each applicable level.

It's hard to say much about RPGT. The screen shots have looked okay, but haven't really shown anything of interest. Right now, I'm assuming that it'll be like PCGen, compiled from a different language, polished up, and using a non-text database. If it keeps the flexibility of PCGen and adds some polish, it could be the poop, though. Right now, it's pretty much vaporware, IMO.

NPC Designer can also handle pretty much most of your NPC creation/generation needs.

I will say I don't think there is yet one main tool that does it all, each to include my own has a piece missing that you may or may not find critical. So my suggestion is take the list given here and download demos, talk to users and if possible the developers (Most of them are pretty approachable).

Out of all the products listed here I think they can all do a 2nd level rogue thats a goblin but it becomes a matter of how they do it and do you want that method.

Okay, pimp your wares, man.

Is it possible to add spell points, weapon groups, and the Warlock to NPC Designer? How about Epic play?
